Maid / Babysitter in Mumbai

Anyone know how to find a maid / babysitter in Mumbai? Are there any agencies that handle this? Any idea on how much is the standard salaries? Any advice / things to look out for?

Sam

Please tell why you would leave your most precious children, in a foreign country with someone you don’t know and then worry about the cost.

if you must leave the children

go to a hospital find a nurse with time off

and pay her what you would pay a baby sitter in your own country.

some of the best (proficient as well as good-looking) nurses are in beach candy hospital. Had some good moments when I was being treated there years ago. I was a teenager then & a hit with the ladies (sorry sisters!)

Sometimes I find this site very frustrating

Lez,

I have lived my whole life in foreign countries all over the world. I asked the question here in this site becasue this is supposed to be for "expats". I am not worried about the cost but looking for advice -NOT MORAL BS. If it costs $1000 / month then that is the going cost but i do not think that this is a bad question to ask. This site is supposed to be for things like this.
I have read so many posts on this site with so many unhelpfull replies to questions. I firmly believe that if you are not going to be helpfull you should not reply and waste everybody's time.

One more thing for "Lez"

Lez,

According to your profile you are in Liverpool. You also seem to think that a sign changing the McDonalds logo into saying the word marijuana is funny - it seems to me that you are not an expat but just another lost hippy.....

Firstly I’m not a lost anything.

Secondly the altered MacDonald sign is my little chuckle at the establishment, MacDonald’s everywhere selling probably the most unhealthy food known to man, whereas medical marijuana is illegal in most countries, ironic?

What has Liverpool got to do with anything I could have put Sydney NSW quite close, but I live in Liverpool NSW, or did you think that I am a Scouse? a pathetic attempt at stereotyping.
Sorry I must have missed the bit in the forum rules that prohibits non ex-parts from posting.

Anyhow good luck in your endeavours to find a childminder.

Ok sorry lez

Ok so i may have gone too far with the last post - sorry but you pulled a few nerves. I have nothing against Liverpool or 'scousers' per se and you can post whatever you want. The point I wanted to make was that this post was made in the 'expat' section of this site and is aimed at people who are living and working in Mumbai.
My wife and i have 3 kids. When you are living overseas you do not have the luxury of family as babysitters. If you want to have any kind of normal life you have to get a babysitter. In some countries (such as India) you can take this one stage further and get a nanny because the salaries are relatively low. This does not make it wrong - both sides of the equation benfit from this and if you pay salaries equivalent to your home country you just would not be able to afford it. Judging from some of your previous posts i think you can understand this as if everyone here was paid the same as the UK then you would not be able to afford to come here.
As you so rightly point out it is very important to get the right babysitter/ nanny that you can trust. The best way to do this is to ask advice from other expats who are living there - this is what I was trying to do. I think perhaps that you focused to much on the cost issue of my question and i admit maybe i was wrong to include this. This does not mean that we will try to be cheap and we usually pay between one and half to double what local employers pay - similar I am sure to what other expatriate familes pay.

sam,

most people in india will not trust their kids with paid baby sitters. That is a western concept. the norm in india, if one of the parents cannot be at home is to have someone in the (extended) family do the job. Even Indians in the US have "imported" relatives to do the job in the US rather than use a nanny/baby sitter.

In isolated cases, Indians may go as far as trusting a maid who has been with the family for generations with their children and she usually lives with the family. Typically when these nanny's are used, the families are affluent enough and the mom stays home or within close proximity of her kids.

The reason for not using babysitters in India is cultural -- the mothers are expected to do it, and if paid help is used, there is very little that law enforcement can do in case of an accident or abuse.

In your case, you could network wioth the locals and see if anyone comes highly recommended.

agree 100% with crvlr here. Although there are creche's for children where people can live their children but that wouldn't be what u're looking for, right?
