This is pretty much exactly what I am trying to do, although, I am not entirely sure of how to do it. I am starting off with a tourist visa and hoping to just get to know the area / work on my skills; I'm a programmer but I've been out of college for a few years so I could use some sharpening up before attacking jobs.

Best of Luck..!! Hope it works out well for you...

Do keep touring the country to make sure you use the Tourist Visa properly, and the country earns something in return

Well, the country is pretty much going to get 90% of my money...aggressively touring would accelerate this process; I would prefer to make it last a few months, though. I would like to think this is still playing by the rules. I applied for a tourist visa, but, as I begin to actually seek employment, I hope to transition it into a work or business visa.

No one's gonna mind if you look for work on the ground I'm sure. (Well, I guess the wise among us wouldn't shout it from the rooftops to any authorities.)

Beyond that however, an employment visa needs to be arranged from your home country, with a contract in hand saying that you have that job. Moreover, it needs to be reasonably arguable that that position can't easily be taken up by a resident.

So if you find something, there should be nothing to stop you. But your visa won't be "transitionable" in-country no; you'll have to return home to get all the paperwork in order. (Nor can you, apart from some hobby work for your own good fun, "work on your skills" in-country. You are obviously not allowed to work on a tourist visa.)

Please read around this site some more on the ins and outs of it, there's plenty of information on it.

I never knew India had such rules... are you sure you are not talking about the US?

No, he is not talking about the US, he is talking about India, and yes he is correct.

I'm making my way through the mountains of info on the site - I shall get to it! Indeed I am only "working on skills" as a fun and useless hobby; no goals or income.

From my reading on the Travisa Outsourcing website, I understand how a contract, in company letterhead, is needed from both a US employer and Indian employer, and I understand that you have to leave the country to get these other types of Visas.

Thank you for bringing this up -mike

Well I always welcome a sense of humor. I looked at your pictures - you have quite a few up. How many photos do you usually take for each one that you decide to post?

Thanks.. Well, never looked at it from this point of view... and if I try and calculate (as of today) the ratio will be very bad as I haven't posted anything since Dec '07 and have been to 11 or 12 new places since..!!

So I hope you can imagine the answer, I can't...
