Yes, somebody will sell you their land, take the money and reclaim it as their own in next to no time possible. A foreigner cannot legally buy land in India.

Some foreigners have married local women and become land-owners-cultivators of marijuana in the Parvati Valley. They are now the local mobsters.... mafia... whatever.

You could marry a local there...... !!??

Hash666, I donot know the current prices but 15 years I was offered about an acre for 40K rupees in Kullu vally. Agricultural land. NEver followed it up.
If you are not an INdian citizen you cannot legally buy land in INdia. BUt you can try to lease/rent it. Bear in mind that property laws in INdia are not that developed, and their enforcement can be arbitrary.
Some relatively undeveloped areas of Himachal: Kinnaur, Kaza, Lahaul, Spiti.

Investment opportunities

hash666,

I understand that it is very difficult for an individual, even for an Indian to buy property outright in H.P.

However, the state govt. offers opportunities for investment to the private sector in certain areas :

It is not a matter for joking. They have bumped off rivals (including "whites")and paid off / got transferred non-cooperative cops. Dont even ask such questions in the Parvati Valley if you value your life.

Hmmmmm.... there is an ad in Ad-mag Mumbai for a Yezdi in "running condition" for sale. It repeats itself every fortnight for the last year or so. Offer is for 7000. IMHO, if buyer comes along it could be given for 4000 to 5000??

How is the Yezdi in day to day running ? Can I seriously buy one ? What would be the maintenance costs ? (there are other Yezdis in Mumbai, but few...)

If you wanna escape the glacial flooding, I could suggest you zillions of other mountainous hide-outs. Why Parvati Valley ? Do you want firangs and charsees for year-round company ??

The Tirthan Valley next (south)to the Parvati Valley is as unspoilt as anything in the Himalayas these days. very few tourists.

I could join you in a bike-ride to Leh. Time permitting. But on a Yezdi ?? Suppose it conks off? Where will you get parts?

Yezdis are quite popular in Lahaul, so Yezdi parts are probably at least as available as parts for other makes. Once beyond Baralacha, you're not going to get parts for anything until you reach the final stretch of road into Leh anyway.

As far as I remember though Im sure the law was changing only locals can but land in himachal region. Specifically even town dwellers in Himachal can not buy agricultural land ...I do though remember an articel aboutb the law being reformed

PArvati is a special valley with its own rules and etiquette and is a very closed society so to speak

As you mentioned the charris business is a major earner in the valley. Also the locals are very much a breed apart and see themselves as different from not onkly other Himachis but also Indians. I doubt very much proerty would be available to sell
Long leases are possible
I would say though it would be ebst to spend some months up there and get to know the locals ratehr than just going in

I know of a westerner who got a one year lease for 10,000 rupees ...However he has lived in the valley off and on for 10 years and speaks very good hindi.

Parvati is one of the most beautiful valleys in india and is quite distinct from the rest of Himachal especially he upper regions

However since the road was built past Manikaran the feeling of the vallety is changing
Also the dam construction happening in the upper reches of the valley and the resultnat influx of Nepali migrant workers is causing major problems in the valley between locals and the Nepalis and there has been a number of acts of violence on both sides

I'v spoken to a number of locals who beleive things have not yet come to a head

Parvati is like no other valley in Himachal
The locals are very protective of it and they beleive it has very strong powerful energy forces emenating from it
I've also gheard that many outside Himachis fear Parvati due to these energies

Go and look check it out ...It is a quite astounding valley and you'll completly fall in love with it especailly in teh upper regions

Dont know if that helps any but I hope it does

Be careful with the Parvati Valley - strange vibes around that place and too many people going missing!
