Is this a good deal?

I have a senior position at my company in the US which also owns a subsidiary in India (Mumbai). I would like to move to India for personal reasons and the company is offering me about $75K which is about half my US salary. Is this a good deal? Should I be asking them for more? My job function/role does not change, just my location...

Yes of course.. why would you not, given that your function/role is unchanged!! But what may change is the size of the business your job supports( I am assuming your senior position is overhead )... for example you could be a General Manager for a $ 50 Million( in sales) business in the USA, on your $ 150K salary.. but if the Indian business is only $ 3 Million in sales, then the $ 75K salary will appear more than adequate. I suspect your employer does this calculation, and you may want to review with them, so you have a good idea of what ( quantifiable benefit) your salary is bringing to the company. This info can put you in a better negotiating position.

And yes, $ 75K per year can be perfectly enough for some, and entirely insufficient to others.. and the same holds for $ 150K per year .. depends on the lifestyle you plan to lead.

Actually the situation is a bit unusual in that my job/function literally remains unchanged in that I will still be responsible for US business in the same amount as before...just operating out of India (read - working nights and travelling fairly often back to the US...) servicing/selling US market as before so the benefit to the company remains the same as when I was operating out of the US....they just get me now for half price!

Which areas would you want to reside in? any preferences? Or do you already have a house in place? Renting a place here is probably the biggest fixed cost that you shall encounter once you are here. Along with the same, come the variables such as commuting, leisure etc.

Advisable shall be to look for a place near to your work place as commuting could be a nightmare.
