Internet connection in India
I've been thinking about taking a portable computer with me to Goa.
But how does one get an internetconnection to it, and at what price? Have you any advice or experience? Thanks. |

Blag your way into the business centre of a hotel plug in and go. If they want to charge you it is usually only peanuts

There are cybercafes all over India and the simplest way to get a connection, albeit often slow, is to connect to the cafe/shop's hub with an ethernet cable. Price and speed of internet connections vary -- outside of the metros you will mainly be 'sharing' a dial-up connection at 20-50 rp/hour. There have been several threads on bringing a lap-top to India in the 'Geek Speak' section here:

Get a RIM prepay phone and a cable... Costs Rs.4000/-
Internet connections are Rs.30/- an hour peak rate and Rs.15/- an hour off peak. This only works with a proper computer - not with a Mac. ![]()

As long as I've got access to a telephone line in India, I just go to the local Post Office and buy Internet time (from 250 rupees upwards, if my memory serves me well - hmmm) then come back homem connect, dial up the number given (for free)- open an account and voila, I'm online. You have to give your address and telephone number over when buying the Internet time - but other than that it's as simple as pie!
