I know it varies from place to place but please give an idea for the areas you know about.

Edit:
I'm only referring to India , of course.

We pay 800R a month. This is to have the floors swept/mopped, 1 bucket of clothes cleaned and dishes washed (there are 4 memebers in our household). Not sure about a cook because I do all the cooking myself. This is just for a normal maid not a live in. There are lots of "unexpected" costs when you have a live in maid. Servants are known for stealing people blind. My neighbor has had multiple live in servants but they never last more then a few months because she always catches them stealing.

what is the cost of
Check out this thread there is some other info that might help you.

Anyone know the approximate cost for a full-time live in maid/cook?

house hold help charges vary widely from city to city. Usually mumbai is the costliest.

A`fulltime cook cum maid will get a salary of about 2000 to 2500 a month(for a small family of 2-5 members). She will know to cook most common Indian dishes. you will have to teach her if you want her to cook more uncommon(different region) dishes.

she will NOT know any english.

I will probably piss some people off. ( smells like slavery)

I know my former landlord in Sikkim has leased a young girl (14 YO)in the Siliguri area as a houshold help and gave the family 2500 INR per ANNO

YES THAT IS THE YEARLY TOTAL

She gets no extra money just food and some cheap clothes, she is the house peon.

Still very prevelant in a lot of places I am afraid

Hi nayan... are you saying this is a Bombay price?

Sigh... we have had a tough time with maid service. My husband used to have a great maid in Malad who came once a day and did so much.. she was great .. and he paid 700Rps. But once we came to Bandra all bets were off.

The maid we have now was recommended by our rental agent. I know when you have a firang involved people jack the prices up.. and she speaks English... but still. She charges 4000Rps for an hour a day (if we're lucky) 6 days a week. She speaks English (talks and talks and talks.. hehe.. sweet person, but oh boy!) but she does such a lousy job. I have a huge problem with the whole maid thing... I can't get cross or strong or really tell what I want. My husband tells her and she never seems too happy to get instructions. I know the rate is very high.. supposedly it's because it's Bandra.. but I think that may be still a bit crazy. Anyway... be warned. And I know this is *no* help for the live-in question

No this is not mumbai price.

That is why I said rates vary widely accross the country. This would be the rate in kolkata or hyderabad. Rates will be lower than this in smaller cities and towns.

An English speaking maid will command a huge premium.

Ah.. ok... I guess that must be it.

FYI.. she washes (chips!) the dishes, mops the floors, cleans the bathroom and folds the clothes... that's pretty much it. And none of those things are done well... but there you go.

Thanks for the info.

Yep, thats my neighbor. She will higher some little 10-12 year old girl from the village to spend her days washing and cleaning for next to nothing. I felt so bad the first time. It doesn't help that kids here generally look younger then they are. I was really heartbroken that the kid wasn't in school. No chance of upward mobility in her life. Cute kid too . Okay done with my sap story now.

I had major problems with maids. None of them knew how to properly clean--they would use the same towel to wipe the whole house down, even after the first few feet it was only mud they were spreading around.

I finally stumbled upon a great idea - why not get a maid who works at a 5-star?? So... I approached one of the maids at the Taj to come and cleam my house. He agreed and does the best job I could ever imagine. I pay him bi-weekly 1,500INR and he comes three times a week. My place looks like a 5-star hotel when he leaves and he is worth every rupee.

If anyone is in Bangalore and needs a maid, drop me a PM if interested.
