Hi folks, Considering coming to India to teach.....

Hi folks,

I am considering coming to India to teach.

I have taught ESL in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand (most recently)and here in San Francisco, CA. I have also taught Mathematics during my stay in Thailand. Cumulatively, I have over 4 years experience.

I would like to know what areas I should consider teaching in. I am interested in a mellow area - far enough from the city - that offers recreational activities and also some sort of night life, etc. I love the beach so it would be a big plus to be near one.

More importantly, though, How much can I expect to make there with my experience? I possess a Bachelor's degree and a TEFL certificate.

Additionally, I would prefer an opportunity that includes acommodation and benefits. Are these generally offered with these positions?

Once I had a phone interview with Microsoft regarding a coaching job. It seemed like a good arrangement but I unfortunately did not get the offer. This would have been in Bangalore. Perhaps you can also comment on these types of positions if you have experience with them.

Thanks in advance!

If you want any kind of "night life" you have to be in a big city serious

Mumbai should be an ideal place, since it has both night life and beaches.

The beaches of Mumbai are filthy.

I can not imagine anyone in his/her right mind wanting to go for a swim on these polluted beaches.

The problem that you will encounter is that the high end private schools in India that employ foreign teachers have students for whom English is the main language not a second language. These schools have English as the medium of instruction from Grade 1 to 12. This is a completely different cup of tea as compared to teaching ESL in Japan or Taiwan.

The pay that you will get is very low when you compare it to what you would get in California. You will get about $1500-2000/month maximum. If you have a Masters degree or PhD then you will get more.

This happens to be Rupees 60,000 to Rupees 80,000 a month. Teachers in general are poorly paid in India. Govt teachers get paid from Rs 6,000 to Rs 25,000 a month.

I am not being sarcastic coz i really am ignorant .... can you name any private school or college where they pay such high salaries ??

In a foreign school, perhaps.

I know someone who teaches in a village: for five hundred rupees a month!

As with most jobs, don't go to India for the money (my take on it). For every job there are 50 highly qualified applicants, so it's an employer's market.

I'm sure those who live in India now will correct me if I'm wrong. And a disclaimer--I never had a job in India.

If you don't care much about salary, and you want to work in a lovely country and learn lots of things, India is a great place. My parents chose this and I am glad they did, because I got to have most of my childhood there

Well it cannot be generalized this way these days...

who better to know than me, I am a Headhunter and thousands of people like me make a living because its an Employee's Game now...Employers pay huge sums to find qualified employees...

Secondly when comparing money you earn in West with what you earn here, please also take into consideration the cost of living factor..

It cannot be defined so easily...these days its harder to find a good receptionist...rather than a Marketing Manager..

We only get the positions that are hard to fill and internal HR team feels that they cannot do it due to lack of time/resources/talent..

You will need a B.Ed in addition to your present qualifications to teach high school students. For primary school(elementary) it is not required.

If you are looking for a job as an English teacher then you will be in direct competition with the locals, you might want to reconsider that option, but you have other options you can become an American culture teacher or if you are willing to become a technical writer then you can expect a decent pay. If you still want a job as English teacher then you should look for openings in American Schools in India. Places to consider for jobs in India that are close to beaches and offer a decent entertainment are Chennai, Pune, Goa, Mumbai (not my favorite).
