Happy Australia Day!!

Fellow Australians, is there nothing more patriotic than watching the first 5 episodes of Home & Away for 2009 on you tube 6,500nm from home while pondering where to get a Fosters on this 'dry' Republic Day?? (and who can believe that they had Jack killed off?? ) and having a bigger think about where one can buy a bbq (and some decent beef) from?

And if the Aussie guy is reading this who i met out on Fri night/early Sat morn and said he would text me an invite to his Australia Day party.... you're very un-Australian. I was really looking forward to those lobsters and prawns you were telling me about

oh and Happy Republic Day India

All I did today was wake up at 3pm, and watch Australia V South Africa in the cricket. I've got India on the mind though and might buy a plane ticket there later in the year. Should of bought the Fosters the day before, even though it is a terrible beer and rarely drunk in Australia.

I'm not a drinker really, but I did eat some of one of our national symbols today. A warm kangaroo salad, and a big glass of Mango juice.

So, it's Australia day, Republic day, and Chinese new year, the year of the ox. Happy days to all.
Australians all, let us rejoice,
coz we are young and free.
And Howard's gone.

So tell me, is beef readily available in India - what about the other Aussie icon of Lamb? We may be moving to Delhi in a few months and don't think the hubby (and sons) will cope without a good piece of meat!!!!

Lamb is easily available. Beef is not so easy to come by. I found it more common in Bombay than Delhi. Didn't see pig or cow on any menu on my 3 trips to Delhi, but I'm sure it's possible to locate.

I keep telling my No. 2 son to eat his fill of bacon before we head over there. He just can't imagine being somewhere that you can't get bacon!!

I haven't eaten bacon or beef for a long time. My carer doesn't eat red meat.
It never occurred to me. I never saw bacon in India.
Rajasthan had a lot of Mutton and chicken.

I can't speak for anyone else, But I would never be tacky enough to eat a god.
After many years of being total veg. I ate some meat in India last time.
Up north , it is quite common.
I ate some dog, and a bit of chicken.
Can't say I enjoyed it.
Australia Day is different things to different people.
We had 26 people become Aussies today.
It's an emotional thing in a small town. They had a bar b q to celebrate, but half of them are veg people. Quite funny really.
Lucky there were some veg burgers handy.

I'm one of the new breed who do think of it as Invasion Day I'm afraid...you never see many happy Aborigines on Jan 26th...

Maybe we need a Unity Day?

The only highlight I miss is the Thong Throwing Competition in the park. Just to see the raised eyebrows of International visitors! For overseas readers Thongs in Australia are called Flip Flops in many other countries... not skimpy underwear!

No offence taken by those celebrating mind. Have a good one! As they so eloquently say in some parts of Oz.
and then i woke up...

I live in a town of 1/3 aboriginal people.
It's a protest day for a lot of people.
The Australian of the year is Mick Dodson.
A long time Aboriginal Activist.
Maybe it'll do some good, but I've already got some racist comment about it.
There's a lot of rednecks out there.

Welshy- Fosters is maybe one of the most confusing things to come out of Aus, I don't think I could even drink it to be patriotic?!

Pale- glad to hear someone aside from me eats the national emblem

6ofus - I am still trying to suss some good meat in Mumbai, it is around, think its just a matter of trial and error to find a good butcher. I don't mind mutton, but haven't cooked with it yet, and am not a fan of pressure cookers. It also just doesn't hit the spot like good old fashioned beef does. lamb i have seen in some supermarkets, but the size of the chops/cutlets wasn't worth buying, so that's on the butcher's list too. I have seen a lot of bacon around in hotels etc

oh....and i got the invite after all...so I'm off to an Australia Day bbq after all....and here's hoping there's plenty of meat

Australia lost in the cricket, I haven't had a sip of alcohol, and it never went above 30 degrees Celsius. Some Aussie day!
