Gifts brought to India

For those of you who have been in India a while and have travelled back and forth, what kind of gifts have you brought for people in India? I'm trying to finish up gift shopping for family, friends, neighbors, etc. Any ideas what would be most welcome? Thanks.

Dont bring Cadburry or Mars type bars these are very common in India. Bring Lindt & other swiss chocolates. A box/tin of Liquor chocolates could be a great gift.
Calculators are being sold at trafiic signals by vendors so you may skip this.
In case your friends live in north bring some good thermal wears. All big brands like Levis, Reebok, Nike etc. etc. have their outlets every where so these are no longer novelties.
Cheese is another item but avoid the strong ones.
In case your friends drink a bottle of Chivas Regal is always welcome.
Good luck.

A bottle of good wine or just a regular bottle of whiskey or the like is popular. Its hard to find any decent wine unless you have comissary access unless you want to pay a mint.

If the people you are visiting are western ask them what they miss from the real world. My husband is back in the States this week and will be buying, in his words, "a big honking box" of goldfish crackers for himself. You can buy things like Cheez-Its and Poptarts here but they're not free.

Again for the more Western host find out if there are any books they're waiting on. Books are very cheap here but the selection is not what one might want. So if there is a recently released bit of popular fiction that they want...

Although surprises gifts are fun, asking what they need or want can also go far. One of my friends recently visited and brought Flake Bars and a new cookbook from a fave author. Not what she was going to bring but highly appreciated and useful for me.

On that thought... *wanders off to the freezer to find a Flake bar to nibble on for breakfast.*
