Finding an apartment.. what to expect??

Hi all,

I have another question today. My boyfriend and I will be moving to either Chennai or Delhi in August 2008. He will be doing his master's degree, and I will be (hopefully) working after just finishing my B.Ed degree. So, basically we will be looking for an apartment but don't have a lot of money to throw around.

I'm wondering what we can expect for an apartment on the cheaper side. And more importantly, what is the cheaper side? How much should we be looking to spend for a basic apartment? I would like a place with a kitchen, a bedroom, A/C, and a safe location relatively close or convenient to travel to either JNU or University of Madras. Is there anything else you feel is an absolute necessity in an apartment?

What should I expect to pay for a deposit? Where do people do their laundry? Is it easy to set up an internet connection? Do most apartments include utilities or should I plan to pay these extra? And most importantly, where do we find such apartments? We will find an apartment after we arrive, but it would be nice to know where to go. Is there anything I should watch out for when checking out apartments? Are there any common problems such as bugs, water leakage, etc?

Just to point out, I'm not looking for advice on which city to choose.. that decision depends on the programs my boyfriend gets accepted to. I'm just looking for general housing advice.

Sorry for so many questions, if you can only answer a few, that would be helpful! Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

My boyfriend is about to start work in Delhi for a couple of years, fortunately for us his employers have arranged his accommodation, so I can't help you directly with your queries. I can get you started with some answers though, about finding an apartment, have a look at the links to similar queries at the bottom of this thread. If you don't find the answers there, look at the links at the bottom of those threads.

You could also search in the "Moving to Chennai" or "Moving to Delhi" forums. For info about the internet, there will be a thread in the "Electronics in India" forum. I'm sure you get the idea.

No doubt it will leave you with unanswered questions, but that will be a good start. Good luck with the move!

What I would call a "cheaper" apartment definitely wont come with AC.

As you are staying for a long duration you can rent an unfurnished apartment and install AC and other appliances with the permission of your landlord.

1. Deposit - in most cities (other than mumbai and bangalore)its 2-3 months rent.

2. laundry - people handwash clothes themselves/maid or use washing machine. No concept of laundromats. There are also dhobis(washerman)who will collect your garments from your doorstep and deliver back washed and ironed after 3-4 days.

3. Internet - fairly easy to set up the connection unless you live in a furflung suburb.

4.utilities - rent, specially for long term renters, will never include utilities.

Thanks for the advice. Are there any common problems I should prepare myself for with respect to apartments? Bugs? Mold? How often to power cuts happen? I suppose this may be a trickier question as it may depend on the area, but any general information would be great!

Bugs,... Molds... Depends .. which area u take up an appartment.. moreover... How clean u keep ur rooms...

Power Cuts.. Again depends where u take up the apartment... A 2 room set apartment in South Delhi somewhere near to JNU would cost you approx. between 6,500 INR to 8,500 INR. Also depending upon how posh the area is.

U may try finding the apartment in Vasant Vihar somewhere near the Priya Cinema Complex as that is pretty nearby from the university JNU. ... and moreover in a good location as well.. Rest the locations is not worth staying for a foreign couple like u. I would not rather recommend u both 2 stay near Munirka, Katwaria Sarai, RK Puram etc... U wud have ppl buggin u day in & day out.

The above explanation talks abt renting in Delhi... U may always join us in the New Delhi Meet up forum and get to meet us all in one of the meet ups planned by the organisors.
Take Care.

Thanks for the advice wsminkapila! That's good that it was focused on Delhi as it's looking more and more like we're going there and not Chennai. I will definitely check out the New Delhi meet up forum after we arrive!
