Your parents were Indian citizens? or just passing through. If they were Indian citizens, or you ever held an Indian passport you can get PIO Card
See Indian High Commision London website and India Bureau of Immigration site for the full details. Lots of discussion about these matters here too, search and browse and you willfind a lot. Oh..... Welcome to IM ![]() |

It would be important to know whether you are going to India on an ex-pat basis or local employment basis as the salary / package would differ a lot between the two.
On expat basis your salary will be quoted in US dollars which would be on par with International salaries and every perk you can think of..... rent/expense free house in a posh area, car with driver, medical benefits, children's schooling either in a top school in India or in boarding back home , maid etc at home paid for by the employer , pension contributions , free holiday trips back home etc. If you are employed locally you may or may not be able to get nearly all the above but I doubt they would give you a very high salary paid in foreign currency, children's schooling abroad, maid, free holidays back to your home town. I am positive there are members here who fall into both categories above who can either fine tune my list or correct it if I am wrong. chagu |

I will be there on an expat basis - employed by my current USA based company. My salary will be in US dollars. So, I need to know the customary list of perks that go along with it. Some of those you list (school, house, car/driver) make sense. Am also interested in making sure all contigencies are addressed in an employment agreement. So, I am looking for someone who can help me legally document those.

Woops! Sorry, I think I posted the right answers in the wrong thread!!!! Now to find out where I should have posted that reply!
What I meant to suggestto you was contacting Global Adjustments who have branch in Chennai. They should have or know about all the resources you require. They have been kind enough to put me in touch with a couple of people even though I am not their customer, which is always a good sign in a business. Last edited by Nick-H : Dec 4th, 2005 at 22:34. I spoke to a friend of mine whose husband worked on an expat basis in India and all over the far east. Her advice was as follows...most large corporates will have their own contracts and it is up to you to negotiate any extras you wish to include/exclude. To document these you should hire a local employment lawyer as the will be well versed in the legal terminolgy, and also ensure that if necessary the document will be suitable in a US law court.
I hope this is of help. |

For those of you that are expats, what things would you have liked to have had in your package?
Your information has been very helpful. This is a great community. |

I am currently here in Delhi on an expat arrangement. All negotiations were done before my departure and drawn up and agreed to. Package includes US salary, furnished apartment with help, phone, mobile and internet, car and driver and all groceries. One thing that I made sure to include was a clause regarding health. While I have travel insurance that covers me for all times I am not working, I had a clause put in that if required, my host company would be responsible for all medical costs, and if necessary, any associated costs for repatriation. If something were to go wrong and I needed a medically assisted flight, these can run up to huge money!!
Good luck with your move. ![]() |
