Easy to find European fellowers in Bangalore/Chennai

Hi all,

As I might move to India this year, I wanted to know if there are European communities in Bangalore/Chennai and how strongly they are connected for outings and cultural events.

In some Asian countries foreigners do not make much efforts to meet others but their own circle of friends or the locals, but as I have not lived in that so different environment before, it would be nice to have some campanionship from the same cultural background as well.

Any idea or help?

Thanks so much!

There are some cafe's/restaurants that expats frequent in Bangalore. You would have to visit some of these and build the relation (from scratch that is) and then hope to meet up with some of them on a regular basis. Also depends on where you work and if there are many more expats/europeans there for you to jell with.

Another avenue for germans is the max muller bhavan and for french the alliance francaise (both cultural centres from the respective governments).

Then for sure another place is IM. Cand see many people moving into Bangalore and we can build a IM community in bgl

Here is a 'for-profit' group head-quartered in Chennai.
http://www.globaladjustments.com
It's newsletter has quite a bit of info on expats in Chennai.

Thanks

Hi

Thanks for your help! The Chennai newsletter looks very good, and I will try out the different venues in Bangalore.

On the other hand, I won't be an expat in India as I would still need to find work on a local basis ...

Meeting other ex-pats in Bangalore

Well I've been living and working in Bangalore for three weeks now, and have not found it easy to meet other ex-pats. That's mainly because I don't know where to start! Anyone have any tips or ideas?

OK, thanks... I wondered if there were some venues or clubs people could recommend, but if it requires organising... here goes: Any Bangalore ex-pats who fancy meeting on a regular basis, say Saturday lunch at Koshy's?

Thumbs up Bangalore Ex Pats

Hey John, Biggi and others:

Welcome to Bangalore, my home town. One organization that is worth connecting with is the ICYE/India. They are geared towards young persons (defined upto 30 years) and they have many exchange programs, usually long term. But perhaps you can connect with some of the local stuff they do. The staff, who I know, are real dedicated to foreigners. It is non-profit and they might be able to steer you in some directions. Ask for prsident Dr. Anand Monoraj and tell him his long lost cousin made this connection.

International Cultural Youth Exchange
ICYE - India

No 4 Royappa Road, Frazer Town

Take care and enjoy Bangalore and all it offers you...

Hytea

This may be a bit off as it's nothing to do with BLR/MAA. but there is an association in Hyderabad for expats, HYTEA. It seems more than possible that same may exist in other cities too.

Well it can be easy and sometimes hard to meet Europeans in Bangalore.

I was in Bangalore for 6 months last year and didn't meet that many Europeans. Made friends with a bunch of guys for about 4 weeks over there and then they all drifted off there own ways. Everyone is on a different schedule. Also, made a good friend over there but now I'm soon returning for 2 months I find he's leaving only a week after I get there.

So, I guess the problem isn't so much meeting people just that it can be hard to find someone on your time schedule.

Biggi:
you can make local friends, unless you dont want that.
The reason I say so is, even if you find other European friends they will likely be expats/visitors like you.
So local friends will be in a better position to help should you require.
In BLR there are some streets known to have lots of pubs close together...

Slightly offtopic but thought just might add:
If you find a job while you are in Sg, your return (read 'pay') will be higher.

Slightly more offtopic: Yeah tell me about that...

In India this might not be so much of a problem... rather be prepared to answer why are you married/not married... how much money do you make en such ...
