thanks for that Capt. Was just curious. We've recently taken on a house keeper/ cook and it's working out fantastically. Good english, great with kids - and the cooking is sublime. Wonderful india food of course - not to mention cheese cake, creme brule, apple crumble, etc. She can pretty much cook anything western we ask for! Our friends are eyeing her up with envy - may need to increase her wages!

Does she have a sister in Delhi? If we were to have a cook, this is the kind of lady we'd want!

Seriously, though, thanks for all the info on this subject. I don't know how we're going to feel about having someone doing our dirty work for us. It will take some getting used to, no doubt.

One gets used to it very quickly!

Although I/we have never had anyone to cook, and now we just have a lady who sweeps and waters the garden every day, and who sometimes sweeps the house.

ok....everyone just back off.....

Her cooking is non-negotiable! And all poachers will be treated as such!

Pity about the timing for this post though. She has a niece who was looking for a job - and apparently she's a better cook (although I fail to see how). She is now in the happy employment of one of our friends.

Sorry to rub it in - I've taught her how to use an espresso machine......cafe latte with breakfast Oh and nick.....her roasts are fabulous...

Well, if you should hear of anyone else with similar culinary talents (Indian & Western) who is looking for work, please let us know.

As we're now at the point of actually interviewing staff, can anyone offer advise on salary levels for a driver, maid and/or cook (living on the premises)? We're assuming that relatively high salaries will be requested as we're ex-pats, but we'd be grateful for any tips on what might be considered reasonable/unreasonable in the circumstances.

hmmm...I'm guessing it will depend on a number of factors (hours of work, live in or not, responsibilities, etc). All the people we talked to (both indian and western) used 4-6,000 rupees a month as a general rule of thumb for a live in housekeeper/ cook. Undoubtedly the staff you interview will have an idea of how much they should be paid

by the way - reading back over the post - our housekeeper has a friend from her church looking for a job - housekeep/cook? Don't know what her cooking is like, but she has worked for western families before. What part of Dehli will you be living in?

mmmmm....I'm sitting here typing this while sipping a latte and munching on a chocolate donut freshly baked by our housekeeper!
