Dog owners in Bangalore?

Hi,

We will move to Bangalore and I am looking for nice dog owners to walk our dogs together. Mine is a black/tan mongrol of 2 years, f, which loves to run around and play, especially with big dogs.

Thanks for your message.

Arrow Wait

I would wait till you get there and see where you live. Chances are even if someone would walk tou pet it would be someone who lives closed to you.

Arjun Sajnani, director of "Agni Varsha" and owner of Sunny's restaurant, has two enormous dogs--golden retrievers? I can't remember. They hang out on the stoop of the restaurant. Arjun's a friend of mine. You can wander over there and see if the dogs are around.

An an foreigner in Bangalore, you probably would not be living in 'real' Bangalore. If that is the case, your chances of everyday contact with native Bangaloreans would be less. If you live in a rather upscale neighborhood, chances are high that you will find a lot of dog owners. You are in good company, then.
Wait till you get there

BTW, how are you flying your pets to BLR? If I may, can I know how much it costs to do so?

Dogs in Bangalore

Hi there

Thanks for your postings...!

I do not know yet when and how we will go to Bangalore, most probably at the beginning of next year. Still, I wanted to see what the situation having a dog in India is like. I was shocked when I saw a thread in this forum of how people discourage to bring in your cat as most probably it won't have a nice life here. I would love to bring my dog, but now I am hesitant...

I won't live in an expat place, so I do think I will get in contact with locals.
But Indians are quite afraid of dogs, aren't they? And they might not understand too well how people can love their dogs so much...? Still have to figure all that out. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

You are partially right when you say Indians are generally a bit scared of dogs. However there is a very real distinction made betwen dogs and pets!! Dogs being the numerous strays to be found around India, these are feared by many India as they are regarded as dirty disease carriers (and there may well be something in that)
Pet dogs on the other hand are fairly common these days and these will be afforded a bit more respect than the local strays (as in the locals won't be as quick to throw a stone) so owning a dog should present you with few problems. All the medicines and vets are now available and finding someone to walk your dogs shouldn't be a problem!

I thought that whole discussion was fairly silly. Sure, bring your dog. People don't keep them as often as in some other places maybe but having a pet dog is perfectly normal and there are plenty of people who do. Hey, having a forum here with a New Yorker giving you directions to his Bangalorean friend's retrievers should tell you enough! It happens only on IndiaMike

ps If it's a long-hair and you're only going for three weeks please reconsider. I imagine it's mostly the crowdedness that would drive them nuts, just like it tends to do us.

Indiranagar, Sadashivnagar, Koramangala are areas where you can look for staying if you wish to have company while walking your dog. Typically people get their domestic helps to walk their dogs, rather than themsleves (but occasionaly).
