Question Difficult to live in Bharatpur

Hi,
just wondering if people could give us some advice. My husband and I are movng to Bharatpur, Rajastan. He went at the end of August and I am moving out in January. He is finding it really tough and is thinking of throwing in the towel and moving to a different country in Asia. In addition to all of the culture shock, there is our separation, homesickness and difficulties in working practice (I am reluctant to say outright corruption).
The thing that he is finding most difficult is that the company has only found poor quality accommodation in a hotel. We are desperate to find our own place but trying to find somewhere to rent in or near Bharatpur has proven very difficult, we have tried most of the usual routes, asking for local help, knocking on doors, there are no agents nor anything advertised (obviously I supose). I am going to put some posting on the web but not very hopeful as even his multinational company is having diffculty getting an internet connection! We can't really get a straight answer from people about whether the house is available to rent and when. Has anyone any advice on what else we could do to find a house? Does anyone know of a house in or around Bharatpur that we might be able to rent?
One concern is that most people seem to have moved to reasonably large town or city and Bharatpur while nice, is not a large city - have we made an error in our location?

Welcome to IndiaMike

If you guys do stick it out, please post your experiences: it will be really interesting to hear from people who have moved here but not to a major city...

(and this is a country where you needn't be reluctant to say outright corruption!)

Hi Rhiannon,

I am sorry to hear about your experiance.

I live in mumbai and have never visited bharatpur. What I did see during our visit to rajasthan / jodhpur was that towns are divided according to caste.

I do not know what enquiries you have done or what are your requirements. But it may be worthwhile to

1. Drive / walk around the town specifically in areas where you want to rent. Talk to people in the area, it may be that the area where you want to rent is predominantly jain / brahmin and they would be worried that as meat eaters you are not a welcome addition to the area. and hence even if something is available they will refuse you.

2. Let your local chemist, doctor , restaurant owner , Hotel owner know that you are looking to rent and are willing to make the no meat compromise.

4. Is there a local club or a meeting place for al big babus to meet. ask your husband to get himself invited and then network there to find accomodation.

3. Talk a lot to anybody in general about how difficult it has been for you to live in a hotel.

4. enlist the help of your husbands co-workers - they know the local language and can find the problem / compromises reqd.

5. It may be that the MNC that your husband is working with is not welcome and hence the local people want to make life difficult for all concerned so that the factory is closed down. There can be any no of reasons that these guys are turning you down. the best way to overcome this is by understanding the reasons and eliminating each opposition.

I hope these are of help. It will be a shame if your husband has to give up and go back.

Regards
Mani
