Nope, you'd normally put it in local currency, unless perhaps it has some extra menu for foreigners and would specify a different currency (unlikely, never seen this, although you may or may not get a language menu to suit you). Maybe walk into the bank and ask them about it? Or call your own?
Did you tell them you were leaving for abroad? There are reports of banks automatically blocking your card in case of any irregular traffic. Which sudden substantial withdrawals in far-away places would certainly fall under. If so, you'd need to inform them to unblock it. Other than that, your card needs to carry the right logo (and therefore chip) to match one of the logos on the machine to be accepted, but you'd better have thought of this before leaving...

Hi Siri uk
Just keep trying different banks. I had a real problem with one card because even at banks that used the chip on it I couldn't get money because my bank at home took so long the transaction kept timing out. citibank was the only bank I could find that would work for that card. My other card was good in a lot of different machines. So just keep trying different machines until you find one that works. Worst case scenario, I had to email money to a friend back home and get him to send me cash by Western Union when I was in a place that did not have a bank I could use for an extended period.

Whenever I used my ATM in India i always just used rupee amounts and never american dollars. You could be having a problem in that your bank is blocking the transaction due to security reasons. It might look a little odd to them if one week your using it in Europe and the next time it's used is in India. I made sure to tell my bank i would be in India for approx 5 months before I left and never had a problem and then informed them i was back in the US if any problems arose after i left.

Although my Canadian debit card worked in India, I had to try many different bank machines before finding one that did work.
I met other Canadians with the same problem as well. Not sure if this also applies to UK citizens. I found the banks with the PLUS sign was what worked for me. The cirrus sign was not enough. My debit card is not a Visa. And I am sure if I was taking advances out wiht my Visa card other banks would have worked. So when in Bangalore/Pondicherry and Mumbai I used Citibanks or HSBC banks and never had a problem. I found the international or national banks worked as opposed to the state banks. When I used a State bank (State bank of Mysore for example) it gave the reply that my transaction was invalid. Talk about stressful.Oh, and yes you always take money out in local currency. |

when you use the debit card as an ATM card, it does not uuse the VISA network (that is for purchase only) there should be other symbols on the back of your card. Check to see if atleast one of these (on the back of your card) matches with those on the ATM. If they don;t you may have to look for another ATM.

Hey Siri,
It may be as one said due to ATM you're trying to use the card at. Make sure the ATM does accept VISA.. It can also be due to your bank not authorising the transaction due to all cloning problems we have had in the UK. Best thing to do is to speak to your bank and make sure you are able to use your Visa Debit outside of UK. Although it is Visa, it is Visa Debit and there may be restriction set on using your Visa Debit by your Bank. With regards to amount, you ALWAYS put local currency, not UK Sterling. |
