Considering Re-locating
Thanks for the provider of this site, it is excellent.
I'm looking to relocate to India but wanted to know if there are any country houses type available (outside of main cities) that have good broadband connection. I work from home at the moment and make around 100-150k a year, which is OK but not sufficient for a good life. I think it will go further in India as I can do this work from anywhere in the world. I'm not too worried about taxes as I can structure my affairs accordingly. I need access to a good private international school, relative proximity to a good private hospital (though not essential). My preference was around Mumbai but could not find a good location. Anyone have any suggestions ? I need a large property with some land - how much would this cost me ? I'm of Indian origin and I think I should be able to get a PIO card should I need one. |

In any event get the PIO card first if you qualify -- 15 year visa with employment and property ownership privileges.

Pune might be preferable to Mumbai.

I fully agree with Aisha ji, if you are considering western part of India Pune is just the right place.

Been a few times before and travelled round as well. I've spent quite a lot of time in Mumbai but did not like it that much, far too hetic, but would be good to have some proximity.
Yes thought of Pune. Earnings in GBP per annum. I had a look at quite a few property sites, but most of these seem to sell flats or newly built houses, I was looking for an older large house with some land, possibly that I could then convert to a B&B and have a large garden. The internet acccess and schools are essential. |

I would suggest that you lease a place for a year or two before committing to a purchase. If internet access and schools are essential then you cannot look too far beyond a large city where a country house with land can cost you a lot. Around Mumbai you may be able to find something you want near Lonavala/Khandala or Alibaug but it's not going to come cheap. A new hill station Lavasa is being developed near Pune where you may get what you want. Check http://www.lavasa.com/ for more info.

Panvel, near to Mumbai can be a good idea to live. Here you can get Broadband connection, International school.
Some good hospitals in Kharghar, vashi, Nerul area. connectivity to the Mumbai/ Pune is good. I could see there are lot of banglow in Panvel, you can take one on lease. other option can be North India, where you can get better independent house in comparision to Mumbai.

Thanks for that Prak, looks really good - are there any others around ?. I must admit some of these indian property sites are poorly designed. From a country that produces IT graduates by the thousands no thought has gone into why the user would use this site.

And the properties!!
Is it really hard to Live comfortably on 150 GBP a year? Wanna swap lives? My total income is 6,000 GBP a year. I would consider my life to be a comfortable, good life. 100,000 to 150,000 pounds is about 320,000 Australian dollars, that's an extraordinary amount of money. |

Been there, done that. Never again am I buying property and building there. It's painful enough in the US, and I did in both countries, glutton for punishment that I am! Quote:
150K GBP at today's rate of ~1.64USD comes to over $250,000! My husband, 2 kids and I live on a fraction of that in the US. But for me, it's not just the money, it's also the quality of life e.g. air quality, day-to-day life that is almost as important as how far my money will go. PIO/OCI card shouldn't be a problem for you given your national origin. |

I have had the opportunity to re locate three times, but I wouldn't be going to a job or a partner, and Like Nick says, the things that are new and amazing become your normal after a while.
Then I would have to DO something with my time. I could volunteer, I could travel, I could sit on the beach, do tours for westerners, but what about for thirty years, or forty?. It's a huge decision. Even with a decent amount of Money, like 10 crore a year, I would still have to fill in my time. Could I garden for the rest of my life, probably, but I could do tha there, and with the added support of the government to pay for my medication and hospital stuff. I also have a government house for life, which is a biggie. I'll have one soon anyway. It sounded wonderful at first, and then you have to do it. India is incredible, a trip a year for three months is really good, and it's enough for me i think. |
