Clothing shops in Delhi

I want to buy a few Salwars in Delhi that are acceptable to wear to work - ideally cotton, in fairly plain colours. Any ideas where I could start looking? I heard that somewhere like cotton craze might be good but I don't know where there shops are, and I only had one person reccomend them. Do they also sell normal mens business shirts? Does anyone have any better/other suggestions?

mention it to your hotel desk, and before you know it, you'll be at the nearest place, which seems darn near everywhere!

Delhi you have many markets to buy, when you going to shop..if you are planning to buy winder, then i doubt you will get cotton dress now,its littel tough to find cotton salwars. Now all shop are packed with warm winder clothes.

CP,karol bagh,Sarojini nagar market ,you get good salwar set with reasonabel prices.
"normal mens business shirts",you will get at Cannaught Place &all markets. But CP you have many shops, Try "Deepsons"17E ,e BLOCK.

Thanks for the tips - I'm going to be in Delhi in Feb, so I guess the summer styles won't have come into the shops? I was hoping to get some lighter salwars for summer wear, but I guess I could go for some between season stuff.....

Are the shops you mentioned fixed price? I feel more comfortable in fixed price shops, because my bargaining skills are pathetic

Summer starts soon so you'll see summer styles in the shops already in Feb. And I don't know why Radz thinks it would be a little tough to find cotton salwars in the winter; what else would salwar kameezes be made of? Wool? Down? Patagonia fleece? In winter you'd see more of pure cotton and cotton-blend cloth, while in summer you'll see the same and also some extremely light weight guazy cotton dresses and some sleeveless. The boutique type shops in hotels or in swanky parts of town would be high quality, fixed price, but very high price. Otherwise most women buy cloth (Lajpat Nagar will overwhelm you with choice) and get a tailor to make the dress. Probably too compicated for your first salwar kameez. A big shop with very nice hand-dyed high quality cotton readymade sw's is Fab India in south Delhi. In Connaught Place, "The Shop", (on the road with the Bank Of Baroda for credit card advances, across from the end of Janpath Market) has just a few salwar kameezes upstairs, but always very beautiful. Those high quality dresses keep their shape with time and washing better than the cheaper ones.

Infact you can buy Salwar, all over Delhi. However FabIndia in M block GK-II market is good. Its fixed price and open on Sundays.
Other areas to shop (bargaining skills comes handy here) are: Sarojini Nagar, CP (Mainly Janpath), Lajpat Nagar. Some fixed price shops are there in Khan market, South Extension market, Ansal Plaza( Shopper's stop) and Karol bagh.
Cotton is freely available all round the year.
Business Shirts: CP offers good choice and in all price ranges.

salwar kameez in the south?

I understand that the Salwar Kameez is a northern dress. What is the equivalent clothing for the south such as Kerala? Or do they stick with sari down there?

I was thinking about getting some clothes in India (both casual stuff and a tailormade suit), however as my length is 2 meters (6'6"), I'm unsure whether I will find anything in my size.

Will be staying in Delhi/Mumbai/Jaipur. Any comments would be greatly appreciated

You may as well tailor the casual stuff too. It is so cheap there is no reason not to. However it is best to find a shop via recommendations of past customers. Some of the work we saw was quite shoddy.

If you own clothing you want to have made up, take the garments along and the tailor will use them to cut a pattern -- your chances of getting what you want are much greater that way than if you try to describe the garment.

Of all the shopping we did in Delhi, and we did 4 days and nights of it (karol barg, janpath, CP, ansel plaza, palika, gol mrk, govt. emporiums off CP) by far my favorite was karol barg. The Karol Barg shopping district in the early evening was amazing. They have clothes stores up the wazoo and I saw a couple tailors also.

Thank you for all the tips!

I'll try my luck both in Mumbai (recommended by the Lonely Planet) and Karol Bagh. As we will visit with a group of 20+, we should keep them occupied for a few days

I agree with Sarojini market; that was definitely my favourite place for clothing shopping when I lived in Delhi.
