Buying Furniture in Chennai
Arriving next Wednesday, initially to the Guest House, as I need to get some basic furniture before I can move in to my new place.
What's the recommendation on where to buy the basics: bed, table, chair? Price range: cheap to moderate. Idea: can I get a bed with four posts to hang a mossy net over? Ideally, it would be available there and then from the shop for instant delivery: I don't want to get into long waits for ordered stuff. My new home is in Abhiramapuram. Guest house is in Rotapettah. I notioced quite a few furniture shops in Royapettah when I was there before; is it the best place to shop? |

Royapettah is the best place to shop for furniture. I bought it there as well.
Cheap furniture...try the tubular metal ones for living room seating...light, sturdy and easy to carry. Cost me Rs 6000 for a light cushioned sofa, two cushioned comfy chairs, a shoe rack (all the three are metal) 2 molded plastic chairs and a small glass-topped coffe table. The metal ones did not catch rust at all. You can get beds with mozzie net facility. Beds range between Rs 2000 to Rs8000. My double-cot, double-mattress set with 4 Zecron pillows cost me around Rs11,000 Tables...Rs 3000-the sky... A good sturdy 4 seat one would be at Rs 5000-6000. The blokes never stick to the time they promise it. I had to wait for 4 hours when they had promised me one hour. Yelled twice on the phone. Stress upon immediate delivery before making the purchase...or arrange for your own transport. Local carriers...Royyapeta to Abhiramapuram would be upto Rs. 300 for a mini truck depending on the load. My refrigerator however arrived even before I reached home from the store where I bought it.

If you are staying near Rotapettah then i would suggest try "Sathya furniture",the showroom&shop is on Rotapettah high road, near Luz corner. Cheers Radz

The cheapest possible option for 'bachelors'
Metal sheet & pipe single cot (the one painted in military green colour) - rs 500 Bed & pillow - rs400 Foldable /plastic chair - rs250/ chair Table (small) with a side draw - rs500 Bucket(!) & mug - Rs 150 Door mat - rs50 Curtain, bedsheets, towel etc - rs400 (If the bed doesnt have stand to hang the net, get 4 nails. Drive it at the strategic locations.hang the net with strings tied to it ) There are many second hand furniture shops too..... ![]() |

Another possibility is wicker furniture, which is very cheap, light-weight, readily available, eco-friendly and nice-looking. It shouldn't cost any more than the other alternatives, and wicker definitely has a more homey feel. Anyone should be able to tell you where to get wicker furniture. Four-poster beds seem to be much less common, so more expensive, but you can easily get a carpenter to add the posts for very little money. Good luck!

Wow! Lots of good info
Thanks all ![]() Beach and Ragss; can you remember the names of the shops you used? Thinking about it, I prefer the idea of wicker to metal; more homely! Although I might make do with a plastic table to begin with (it can always get used on the roof later) Radz: I'll take a look at Sathya Furniture. Luz Corner: is that the junction with Luz Church Road? ...And I't'd be great to meet up with folks soon ![]() |

Dont worry much about the locations etc. I'm sure there would be some furniture shops near by to your place, whereever it is. It's much easier to by from the next street than from a far away 'bazar' and pay a lot of transportation cost etc.
Where is Abhiramapuram?? Rotapettah has a lot of shops....except dad & mom everthing is available. General Patters road has a huge number of shops selling pre historic automobile spare parts. (who is this General Patters any way?) Ritchie Street is a hellhole of computer parts. Ranganathan Street has all the stinless steel utensils in the world. Mambalam, for all fresh vegitables, fruits & flowers. |
