You can ship a 20' container from Mumbai to the west coast of North America (Vancouver Canada in my case) for about 1900 US - base cost. By the time it's landed, it will come in around 5K... there's the packing and paperwork on the Indian end... the shipping of the container to Mumbai, etc. The last container I shipped cost me $1100 alone for the packing of the furniture and shipping it to Mumbai from Rajasthan.

The Indian shipping company won't know how much it costs on the N.A. end.. because it's out of their control. Yes there will be dock charges, brokerage charges, duty and tax... and you still have to get the container trucked from the port to somewhere to unload it. Depending on how it's packed, you can get about 28 CBM inside. That's a LOT of stuff.

You can ship LCL (loose container load - consolidated with other peoples goods) - where you get charged by the CBM (cubic metre) it runs about $150 a CBM - applicable taxes and charges on the N.A. side will still apply. For a business... this is simply an expense - the goods inside, when sold, will more than offset the cost of the shipping - which, is a deductible cost of doing business.

If your shipping goods for personal use, of course then the actual cost of the goods will be much, much higher than the original purchase price.

Thanks -- very helpful.

In my case we'll be mostly repatriating my personal stuff from working in India for a few years -- at least we'll be able to avoid duty charges...
