Yep, interesting times ahead for Tata for sure.

Looking at the number of Skodas on UK roads, they are almost a 'premium' car here too. They are not cheap. Looks like people are not embarrassed anymore about parking it in their drives or work car parks.

VW have done a good job in marketing and revamping Skodas.

I don't think Tata purchased Jaguar/Landrover so that it could sell those automobiles India. Inf that was their intent, they could have justy opened up dealerships and sold the cars, why buy the entire company?

First of all, compared to what paid for those companues ($5.2B), Tata got a splendid deal at $2B. Also, they are now poised for a couple of big benefits:

1. Make these companies more profitable by using low cost Indian faciltities to make parts for them.

2. Use the technical know how of these companies to build better designed products for the Indian market.

The luxury car market in India has tripled in the last 3 years and is expected to grow at about 25% this year as well....i give into the fact that the seriously rich guys might only be 1-2% of the entire population, but with a base of 1 billion plus even 1% means a potential 10 million customers...and given the costings on the cars its a very sizable revenue opportunity...

Skoda shed its negative reputation long ago, when it became part of the VAG group, and is a respected and well-built car, but in UK it tends to be bought by people who can't quite afford a VW or an Audi, or think they are getting the same thing at a bargain price. Here is markets itself at a higher price, and pretends to be like VW/Audi. It succeeds too, and is seen as a posh car.

It is posh..if nothing else by the sheer price at which it sells and i agree wholeheartedly on it being a well built car.... quality as far as Skoda is concerned ,in India, is not something which they need to market now.....

Does it? It is indeed seen as a somewhat posh car but I don't think people consider it in the same league as Audi or for that matter a VW. It maybe considered equal to a Civic.

I'd have said it has a higher image than Civic. Maybe between there and the Accord. What's the bigger one, Laura? No, Superb? probably more expensive than an Accord.

No, VW and Audi (particularly) would have a much higher rating, but they are hardly seen here at all.

OT - one of the funniest things I've seen in Delhi so far. A lambroghini (possibly an older model geraldo) slowing down to a crawl to negotiate a speed hump - being overtaken by a auto rickshaw!

Really? That's interesting.

A shameless plug here, for www.team-bhp.com --- for everything car-related in India

No I don't think so. I rate it slightly less than the Civic. I asked a couple of colleagues and they rated them equal.

Seeing a few Audis in Bangalore but Merc and BMW will be rated higher than an Audi.

The last thing I need is another interesting forum. I am actively avoiding them for the sake of my productivity .

which is a pity - but in some ways a good thing as well. There's no denying the quality of a merc or bemer - but if you know your engineering and history - then a audi with the word "quattro" on the back is a very nice piece of machinery. And further if it has the designation "RS4" after that - it will eat every other car on the road alive....

In this country of scratched cars, a scratch on a new Maruti is bad enough.

I don't think I would survive a scratch on a new Audi Quattro RS4.

Perceptions about cars are probably totally different in UK and India, being so far apart and all that.

Here, it wasn’t that long ago that Skoda (and Lada) were the butt of all the jokes about cars. Even VA Group are aware of this and have been advertising along the lines of ‘Yes Skoda was a joke but look at it now’.

Skodas have become acceptable now but there are still many who wouldn’t be seen dead in one.
