Breadmaking/Yeast
We're thinking of bringing our our breadmaking machine with us to India. Does anyone know if it's possible to buy packets of yeast granules in Delhi?

We've been here about 6 months and we're still searching for the right kind of yeast as well. I'll be watching this thread with interest as well....

I have had trouble finding dry yeast here, I eventually found it from the 'Blue bird' brand, in packages of 25 grams. Our supermarket here stocks it now and then (you have to look for it whenever you are in the store, one day they have, next it is gone again, and it might not return for weeks). The package is far too much for a bread, so I then would end up throwing most of it away, since you cannot keep it once opened. Also, the granules are much bigger than in the dutch yeast packages. I've tried Indian yeast once in my breadmaker, the bread failed to rise, but that could be due to something else. I've now decided to stick with dutch yeast, the packages are small and light, so it's no problem bringing it along in the suitcase whenever we get a chance.

Dont bother with the big grain yeast in shops . Bread Bakers have a fine yeast which works well, Its very similar to Doves yeast[ from UK available in Lakeland or Tesco a £1.. pop].
You have to be careful with the flour as the gluten content is not as good as 'strong' european flour. Check the breadmaker thread cliveg |

I tried the Blue Bird yeast, it did not work.
I got my best results with fresh yeast. Though only available in 500 gm packs for industrial backing, I found a shop where they sell it in small portions (50 g). I deep freeze it and even after that it works. The backery in your area might give you some hints where fresh yeast is available. |
