Cool Still on Beef and red wine

On the Beef front, managed to contact a "local supplier" excellent steaks, mince, tenderloin, reasonably priced, and top notch quality. Good enough for beef Tataka, and if the japanese wife is happy to cook that with it it must be ok. A little light on fat, but hey who is complaining.

Regarding the local red wines, not cheap, but either of the two local ones previously mentioned are quite acceptable. I agree that given a few years, India has all the possibilities to produce excellent grape.

The liquor shops at the back of INA also have a small selction of imported wine.

Chatting to the larger grocery shops in INA and they can get you most anything you need ( two weeks back a bottle of Kirsch for fondue was sourced inside of a few days )

Anyone know where roller bladding can be done in gurgoan, or if hash house harriers are still running in Delhi ( tried their web site but no response )

There is a store in DlF place Saket, right bang opposite Le Marche, which is a high end liquor store. Its got all imported wines and alcohol. Just saw it a couple of days ago. Certainly check that out.

There is also a private liquor shop at GK 2 , at Savitri cinema which has a good collection.

Defence colony has a shop called the Taste which is importing a lot of meat - regularly see stuff like Rib Eye steaks , Ribs , etc over there..but be prepared to shell out a bit.

This time my question is quite simple (but I expect the answer not so...).

Where can we buy beef (steaks) in New Delhi?
Where can we buy red wine at reasonable prices?
Where can we buy "western" products in general?

I have read in here that there are no real supermarkets in New Delhi. Is this still the case? If so I guess that the household shopping will take up quite a bit of time....

All hints are welcome

In some restaurants of Paharganj (near new Delhi railway Station). You have to do the survey by enquiring some fellow foreigners. But maybe you have to order for them in advance. For Buffalo meat e.g. Kebabs, Biryani, Nihari, Tikkas, Kofta, Korma etc. Jama Masjid, Darya Ganj (Behind Golcha Cinema) Nizamuddin, Bara Hindu Rao (entry from azad market) are the right places.

Yes , their stuff is good but very expensive..... one of the items i like there best are mutton burger patties which used to be very economical but they now sell it for 600 INR a kilo....!!! so even if you pick up about 4 it costs you in the region of 200 bucks.

Ditto with Indage. One Indian reviewer's only comment was to wonder how they got the cat to sit on the bottle...

I beg to differ about the quality of local wines. I've had a few that were passable but so far none that could stand up to a mid-grade french / south african / chilean wine. The imported stuff I tend to avoid in restaurants because the duties, taxes and profit margins quickly transform a bottle that you could buy for 500-800 Rs in a western supermarket in a 5000 Rs treasure that can't live up to its pricing (naturally).

In the jama masjid area there's islamic butchers who sell succulent buffalo steak and do home delivery (triple packed in ice), if you want details pm me. Purchased some REALLY good filet and sirloin from one of them. Pigpo store in Jor Bagh is good for pork and chicken. Then there's the 'Le Marché' chain that's good but sometimes a tad expensive and of course INA market although I'd never buy meat there (not saying the quality is not good but the surroundings are a bit...well...).

Speaking about all this steak...I think I'll go for a rooftop bbq tonight, still have a good bottle of red stashed away and some cuban cigars that've been sitting in my humidor way too long

I didn't mean to suggest that they were all junk -- the local stuff I bought more than once were the Sula Dindori Reserve Shiraz and the Grover La Reserve. Typically stuck to South America/south Africa in restaurants, however painful the pricing.
