Howdy once again,

Have just moved to New Delhi....

This time my question is quite simple (but I expect the answer not so...).

Where can we buy beef (steaks) in New Delhi?
Where can we buy red wine at reasonable prices?
Where can we buy "western" products in general?

I have read in here that there are no real supermarkets in New Delhi. Is this still the case? If so I guess that the household shopping will take up quite a bit of time....

All hints are welcome

Best regards

Biilmann

Khan market springs to mind! Plus there are several other places in Delhi where you can find what your looking for!
Try a search that will almost certainly give you some ideas!

Cyberhippie is right, Khan Market is the best-known place for Western food (don't know about beef though, maybe lamb), but it is expensive. More reasonable (and chaotic) try INA Market (across from Dilli Haat). Also, Sector 18 in Noida has a few reasonable stores with Western food -- a place called Millenium Foods and there's a place in the lower floor of the big mall there. I'm guessing there are similar places in Gurgaon. Both Noida and Gurgaon are hard to get to without a car.

Oh yeah, the only red wine I've ever had in India was from Goa, and it tasted a lot like Manischevitz! I'm not much of a wine connoisseur (just tried out of politeness), but I've never noticed any wine in India, other than the type I tried. Beer and hard-ish liquor seemed more popular, and they were sold in separate stores, not in regular shops or grocery stores.

Hardys red wine is available in some places in India and I'm told some of the new wines being produced in India is quite palatable though I've not tried it myself!!

There are a few supermarkets in Gurgaon, Big Bazaar in the Sahara Mall and Crossroads in the basement of DT City Centre are the best. As long as you want to eat Italian then it's not a problem!!

Bangalore Red is OK

We bought some OK red wine in Bangalore. There is a grape growing area nearby. Cannot remember the name of the wine but is was not bad. Should be available in Delhi.

Red wine is easily available but good red is more challenging. I actually take some with me when I go to India. Look for collaborations such as Glover. I swear a kind produced near Pune near poisoned me..

Where can we buy beef (steaks) in New Delhi?
The best place I & my xpat friends found is Steakhouse and Pigpo in Jorbagh market. Other places are Khan market, vasant Vihar market, INA market (Not really great anymore).

Where can we buy red wine at reasonable prices?
Best selling Indian wines are Grover and Sula. Grover comes from the region north of bangalore and Sula from nasik in maharashtra. Along with the Indian wines, the Delhi government run liquor/alcohol/beer/wine shop also sell wines from France, Spain, australia etc. I personally like the liquor shop in Khan market, they have a seperate section of wines.

Where can we buy "western" products in general?
I assume you mean western food stuff. You can find them in Khan market, GK-I, Jorbagh, Vasant Vihar etc.

Grover, you're right. The mind is the second thing to go with age. I just can't remember what was the first. Actually, I am eager to see how M2's experiment with making his own comes out..

Even though Beef is not produced in India due to a ban on Cow-Slaughter, considered the "Holy Cow" and all. There are a few importers of the stuff from EU, Australia etc. but they will most certainly be frozen products.
Try a shop called Khubchand's English Piggery in Connaught Place, opposite Nirulas Corner House, Near PVR Plaza cinema for other good quality Meat products. Finding wines should not be a big problem.

Beef is banned in Delhi but available in next door neighbour UP. There are some places in Delhi where beef steak is available but offered only to known faces.
Now India has emerged as a big producer of wines. Indian wines are exported to Europe & USA & have earned good rating. I found them in Paris & Berlin.
About western food stuff Vinay has given all the info.
Pigpo is better than Khubchand.
