Hi everybody,
I am student from Belgium and have the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program at the Indian Institute of Management for about 4/5 months(august next year until the end of december/january). I can choose between the campus in Bangalore or Calcutta. Since this would be my first trip to India I am not quite sure what to expect so I will probably have some more questions in the future. For now I would really appreciate it if some you who have spent some time in both cities can give me their opinion on which city you would like to life in for a few months, give some pro/cons, etc... . I just hope to get a better idea of both cities before I make a decision, and I only have week left to hand in my application. Thanks, JC Last edited by Goielle : Nov 21st, 2007 at 17:06. |

Hi
Bangalore and Kolkata are equally crowded and cosmopolitan in India. It all depends on what is your preference. If you are food lover, then probably Kolkata has more options than Bangalore. If you love travelling, then probably Bangalore is better placed.

In both cases the institutes have self contained large campuses. I know for sure the kolkata one is quite far from the city bustle. I think same for the bangalore IIM (some bangalore member plz correct me) So you will not have to deal with the actual city life on a day to day basis.

IIM, Bangalore has a very good campus and the interaction of the IT companies with IIM, Bangalore is good as the city has a lot of multinationals. Dont know much about IIM , Calcutta. But i presume IIM anywhere in India has it's own class.
If in Bangalore the weather conditions are good and there are lot of places around like Mysore, Goa, Kerala etc. |

IIM Bangalore is not far from the city. It was in the outskirts when it started but the city has enveloped it now. It is about 15Kms from downtown areas like MG Road, Brigade road but the traffic will be maddening. It is about 3 to 4 Kms from BTM Layout and Jayanagar, which are nice areas themselves with good restaurants.

In terms of quality I think IIM calcutta is better placed. Also, if ur comming to quench your thrust of knowledge, then culcutta is the place. But if you are looking for a carefree environment then Bangalore should be prefered.

WTF???
Bangalore isn't anything like as crowded as Kolkata. Or as dirty or as polluted or as hot or as dangerous. Otherwise, I guess the are the same ![]() Last edited by machadinha : Dec 1st, 2007 at 11:25. Reason: fixed quote |

I would prefer IIM Bangalore.
My two cousins studied in IIM. One in Bangalore & another one in Kolkata. Bangalore is a growing city & many multinationals company are setting up their business in Bangalore. Also for weekends, there are many places to hang around. There are many place in Kolkata also where you can enjoy in weekends. But there is biggest problem here in Bengal is Band, highly populated and also the college campus is far away from main city. Traveling in Kolkata is highly difficult because of traffic jams. Regarding the college campus, IIM Bangalore is regarded as best among all IIMs. Bangalore campus is very large and has many facilities. I told you what I knew, now you need to decide

Quality of life isn't relevant to a business background. As a platform for career advancement everyone knows Bangalore. They will just laugh at Kolkatta..

Hi,
Thanks to everybody who took the time to give their opinions. I thought I would let know what I decided in the end. In a little over 8 months I will be studying in Bangalore. I am already counting the days . My decision is based for most part on a combination of some more practical things like the weather, more of club/bar/restaurant scene, places to visit nearby during weekends, etc ... and the fact that IIM-B seems to have a better reputation and contacts with companies. I will probably take a few weeks before and maybe a month afterwards to see the rest of the country. Some of my fellow students are going to Calcutta so I will probably visit them as well and see if I made the right choice. |
