Question Apartments in Gurgaun

Hello, I´m new on this forum.
In October I will start a new job near Faridabad, next to Delhi. Now I´m surching for good places to live. I read very often the name Gurgaun.
I´m from western europe and don´t want to lose this used standards. Internet/kable-TV with international cannels, fitness, swimming pool, sauna, parks for walks, places for mountaineering (trip to Himalaya?), relaxing areas - specially for woman, shoppingmalls, hairdressers, ....
Is this possible in Gurgaun?
There are other foreign woman out there for friendship?
I come with a cat. Does anybody have experiences in traveling with a cat? Will I get problems to buy cat food and cat litter products in Delhi? Are home pets usally in india?
A lot of questions, but I hope the internet will help me to give me answer from good, nice people *gg*
Waiting for answer, Ursus Tricyrtis

Yes u will get cat food there, and FYI, GGN is the most Happening and Modest Place in INDIA , so have FUN !! It has nothing like normal poverty stricken India, Very kewl place to be.

Yeah, Zzzehar is right, all the things you want (gym, cable, etc.) are easily available in Gurgaon (except maybe mountaineering, im not positive though). There are so many malls and now they're opening speciality malls (for example one whole mall just for wedding-items). There are also a lot of restaurants in Gurgaon (of all kinds of different cuisines) and the beauty is that unlike other cities in India, nearly all the restaurants are clean and trustworthy (the risk of getting sick from the food is pretty low). Cat food is available at nearly any decent-sized grocery store, I remember seeing it at "Needs", which was the supermarket just 100m or so from my apartment. But, only the extremely high-end apartment complexes have central a/c, most people in Gurgaon just have a/c's in one or two rooms in their house, so your cat may be uncomfortable being stuck in one or two rooms at all times. Another negative thing about Gurgaon is the prices: everything from rent to groceries is expensive as hell when compared to other cities in India (even big cities). Basically, Gurgaon is an upper-class suburb of Delhi ( and delhi in itself is pretty expensive). I mean, if you're a high roller back home in Western Europe, it may still be cheap, but when I lived in Gurgaon, I had gotten used to a low cost-of-living in cities like Hyderabad and Allahabad.

Gurgaon is definitely one of the coolest places in India but it's not free from the poverty... with all the new malls and apartment building being built come the poor migrant workers from UP, Bihar, and Bangladesh and if you drive past the construction sites at night, all the workers and their families are sleeping on the construction sites in bad conditions, so the poverty is there, just not to the degree that it's in in other big cities.

Hello Ursu,

Here are some pictures of guargon. pics speak louder than words. But do remember that India is still a developing country so expect poverty, and other things that are typical of a developing nations such as pollution (same problem in China). etc.

Thanks for this very informativ answer !!!!

You are writing it´s expensive in Gurgaon. For example:
What´s the price for a two person dinner in a good indian restaurant? What´s the price for a Mc Donalds Menu?
And what´s the price for this in other cities?

In the restaurants I've been to, a 2 person dinner can go anywhere from 200rs per person to around 1000rs per person, but I'm sure some of the five star hotels are probablt more expensive. At McDonalds (in Delhi, i've never been to one in Gurgaon, actually i dont remember even seeing one in gurgaon, but there are plenty of Subways and Pizza Huts) if you eat a vegetarian sandwich then you can get out cheap; last year my friends paid only 35 rs or so for their sandwich while my non-veg sandwich was like 50 or 55. A combo meal with drink, fries, and non-veg sandwich came to about 100rs, so McDonalds is pretty reasonable. As for my experiences in other cities, Allahabad is still 30-40 years away from getting a McDonalds or any other international fast food joint, but Hyderabad prices for fast food are about the same. They don't have McDonalds in Hyderabad but at Pizza Hut, a non veg family pizza (family=feeds 4 people) comes between 200-250 rs, and I think it's probably the same in Delhi. Where Hyderabad differs from Delhi is that if you got a 5-star hotel in hyd., you'll pay at most around 600 for an all-you-can-eat buffet whereas the price is sometimes double that in Delhi 5-stars.
Since you're looking for places around Delhi, you might want to take a look at Noida which is a suburb on the other side of town. It has all the things that you want (of course besides mountaineering probably) and I can't say for sure, but I *think* you could find cheaper housing than Gurgaon. The con with Noida is that it's in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and I was born in UP and my family has been there for hundreds of years, so I'm entitled to say that U.P. is a sh--hole. When you see those images of starving children and total poverty on National Geographic or the Discovery Channel, chances are those scenes are being shot in either Uttar Pradesh or Bihar. That being said, you CANNOT leave India without seeing a few places in UP (Agra, Varanasi maybe). The problem with Noida being in UP is that it has a bit of the dirtyness that U.P. is known for and it's not nearly as comfortable in that sense as Gurgaon (except for some parts like Greater Noida).
If I were in your position, I'd probably get a place in Delhi itself, maybe South Extension or New Friends Colony, but that's because I'm used to constant power outages and water shortage. I think for comfort though, Gurgaon is definitely your best bet.

If you are going to be working in Faridabad, living in Noida might be a better option than Gurgaon simply because of the distance, You could find most of the facilities that you are looking for in NOIDA as well!

agni,

well i am not surpsrised that there has been no talk of it late! in fact what surprised me was the sudden announcement of such a project.

many issues need to be addressed before that like power, security, and many other things that can make a massive project like this viable.

Bureucracy has its strange ways!

ursustricyrtis: Welcome to India.
This topic about accomodation in Delhi/Gurgaon/NOIDA has been discussed extensively on IM before; would be a good idea to do local search on IM about this.
I'm sorry, but due to your initial comments on another thread by you, you may not get much response here. I give you the benefit of doubt due to your lack of knowledge of english and expression. I'm no good either that's why I understand.
I wish I could respond to you today, but I'm bit tired and would be traveling over the weekend. So let me know if you still haven't found the info you needed, I'll write to you in detail on Monday.
BTW I'm an Indian male & I have no interest in asking you out for a date.

gurgaon...an urban chaos

for some of us who are in the title represents what we go thru

however, Gurgaon is a leveller of sorts...From the Big Mac to the subways of the world, from a penthouse to a bungalow one can get it all in gurgaon....the rents are not that prohibitive given the fact that most people who stay in gurgaon are either working in large MNCs or have escaped from the hustle & bustle that we call delhi.

Be prepared for one thing....Left of the highway are the lifestyles of the rich & famous whereas right of the highway is the old gurgaon..one that is as chaotic as the new one.

The giggling of new workers ( call center ones ) can be felt across all the 27 shopping malls that we see in Gurgaon....however, with growth comes chaos ..and yet we have managed to survive...

Given a budget..one can find a decent appartment in gurgaon with power backup..thats good i wud imagine

Noida is accessible as well as Faridabad....
I wud imagine Gurgaon to be closer to Faridabad than Noida

I dunno about that, Noida is closer as the crow flies, but maybe the roads are less crowded from Gurgaon to Faridabad

a quick reply. here is a lin to a map of the city, a very rough looking thing but will do the job

http://www.noidabusiness.com/mapsandcity.htm

as you will see noida is on the red dot and faridabad is little further south on NH 2 (national highway 2)

gurgaon can also be seen there.

traffic from both cities to faridabad is as bad or as good, but the distance from noida is marginally lesser. there are other places like eros partments in surajkund which are still closer to faridabad, but i doubt that there would be much expa tpopultaion out there.

with a driver and car you would be better of in noida or gurgaon
