Hi there
I´m thinking about moving to southern India, and researching everything as much as possible before I go to have a good look around. I´ve already moved countries once so I´m more than ever aware of the need to look into everything first, and specially before such a big, expensive, trip even to just to have a look around. Are there any other single females out there who have either now settled in India somewhere, or who are widely travelled in India? Or any Indian women who speak English? If so would you like to be a penpal with someone who is currently in southern Spain? It´d be really good to hear from you! I´m independent, a non drinker, professional astrologer (3yrs training 25+ yrs ago), animal lover and interested in spirituality. Good thoughts, Louisa |

Living here 3 years now, mostly in the South. Do you do Vedic or western astrology? I'm also single, non drinking, a 25 year vegetarian and animal lover, so PM me any time.

Put this book down and go sailing. Then come back and read the book: then it will mean something to you* Actually I read many text books before I set foot in a boat, but when I read this one I immediately understood the wisdom of its beginning. I'm not going to try and put you off your research, especially here on IM.com --- but it is being there that counts! *I paraphrase from a 25-yr old memory

Louisa - Solo Lady!
Hello
I don't know if there are any more solo women in India, but, here I am one solo man on board. Don't get all confused seeing my name or profile - SPICYDAME. That is the best way to attract attention from Good gals I have been roaming around India for 6 months now and I have bumped into many western girls doing the same in India. So, it should not be a problem, per se. Hope to seeya sometime, even though I am not a frequent IMer. - Phil |

I recently returned after living and working in India last year. I lived in Chennai which I would highly recommend though every travel book will tell you to fly in and leave as soon as possible. Chennai is an amazing city. It's affordable, friendly, easy to move around in and right on the coast which helps a bit with the ever present problem of pollution. It's rediculously hot in the summer, but I made it through in one piece, so you'll be fine, too. I lived in the area called Adyar which is in the southern part of the city. It's a great place to be and easily accessible to all areas of the city via bus. I lived by myself and it was just fine. I rode my bike, cooked on my own and made friends with everyone in my neighborhood. It was a little strange sometimes, being a solo woman, but I always felt safe. You'll be fine, too!

adayar is one of the poshest localities of madras!..it depends on the locality/suburbs you live..you may not know you live in india if you live in certain suburbs.....(of tanker waters supply and electricity generators supplying the shortfall...and what not..)
madras has severe water problems (thought the rains have been good this year)...and used to have current (power) issues..with power cuts quite often...the situation is better now..though the elections are around the corner and the ruling madam (her royal highness jayalalitha) usually keeps everyone happy during this time...... the state of tamilnadu of which madras is the capital is ruled by a woman..that should tell a lot ..........after seeing all her party members (including her cabinet) prostrate before her...prostrate..as in completely on the ground..on their chest and stomach.. and touch her feet....its woman power taken to new heights ... |

Adyar may be posh in many areas (especially Besant Nagar), but I had to fill my water tank with buckets when the truck came by once a week and I'd say my power went out on average about once a day. It would be an overgeneralization to say that the entire area is overly posh. I didn't live in a slum, but they weren't all that far away. Adyar is covers a large area of the city and is quite diverse.
I would agree, though, that Tamil Nadu is one of the better places for women, though I think that could be said for much of the south in general. |

Now there's a response out of left field. His comments were sexist!??! Over the years I've seen several people talk about moving to India before even a first time visit. My wife and I just came back from a research visit, to see if we could actually live there without going insane. At the end of 23 days we found ourselves more confused than before we got there. It's an amazing culture for sure. But everyday living in that sort of pollution, corruption, unequal opportunity, non-existant infrastructure, unbridaled growth that only benefits a few, where simple water must be considered as poison... It might just be too much for us to handle. Nick H is right, just being there will bring about questions you would have never considered. His comments weren't sexist. He didn't even mention it but I will certainly say that women have much more to contend with than men.

It sounds right that nothing can really prepare you for India but on the other hand I think going there without doing any research at all would be quite daft! shoooorely dat is not wot u r rekomendeeeng? Yes I´ve also read in my book that in Southern India women have more respect than in the North.. another reason why it appeals to me more than the north, not to mention the climate etc.. in fact the south sounds like it has a lot going for it.. I think living in the campo in Spain, off the grid, as an expat is quite a good way of preparing for India.. it´s very hard getting things done here (waited 3.5 yrs for a phone being told every fortnight that I´d get it in a fortnight), there´s lots of corruption with people trying to rip off expats, people also DO use the campo as an open toilet here.. For 3 years I had my water delivered..now I have some well water.. and I use solar power (so no power cuts tee hee though the country has power cuts AND water cuts) and all sorts of stuff goes on that you wouldn´t expect to see in UK.. but that you WOULD expect to see in India..LOL I think it´s great training for India! LOL India will just be far more extreme, far more exciting, and probably just fine! :0) |

You know, I think your Spain experience just might have been a good warm up for India. A decade ago I took a year off to climb and eat my way through europe. Ended up in El Chorro and a few other backwater areas for an extended stay. No electricity and no running water for a year, now we're talking... |
