i think you ought to have a visit to see if you can even handle the place.

us citizens can obtain visa for 10 yrs.

put your money in a conservative investment and live simply. that advice comes from expat of 15 years. ... up to you.

Wake up Monk! We've already covered all that in the above posts. He's been to India and is ready to live there, etc.

Seattle2India, I don't think spending 5 or so months and coming back to the US for a month and then returning to India would be a problem for US immigration.

Why would it? You'd have a legitimate Visa and an up-to-date US passport. As long as you weren't trying to carrying anything suspicious back and forth (like ripe mangoes ) no one should care.

Of course, I've never tried what you're planning, so someone who has might know better (about the USA immigration policies).

Not true, you could get a job with an indian company and get an employment visa, which is for 1 year, but is renewable indefinitely as long as the work contract is current. there are no restrictions about only being allowed to stay 180 days at a time either.

A very close relative with us passport and 10 year Indian Visa (1 day in Nepal every 6 months) was hassled by US immigration after returning after 5 years. US immigration wanted to know everything about her overseas stay. Spent 6 hours being interrogated. But ofcourse, as I think of it, her brown skin may have been a problem. So speaking from personal perspective, yes it can be a problem.

Leaving every six months could be a big drain on the budget: I would find it difficult to return to UK twice a year (currently wondering if I can manage even yearly...).

But, for those who can afford it, a twice yearly holiday can't really be seen as a bad thing!

To Nepal, however, this wouldn't be an entirely costly proposition would it?

Bangladesh, Bhutan (almost positive not), Pakistan, etc. possiblities for this as well?

Any feedback? Sorry to hijack thread but seems it is moving in this direction..

you could just as well be talking about America. The majority of the states are still quite intolerant, and the federal gov. refuses to acknowledge the states which attempt to legalize same sex marriage or domestic partnerships. So even if a state says it's ok, the union is not considered legal by the federal government.
