Sports Bar? Football (Soccer) Games?

Hello all,

Indian American who just got here a few days ago from California. I love to unwind over a pint/Jameson, some sports (while cricket is cool, soccer(football) is preferable), and some friendly conversation - a bar to call my own, more or less, that I can go to by myself and relax/interact with others. Based on preliminary research, it seems like a majority of the bars are geared towards the group outing/clubbing/loud music scene, is that generally true?

And while I'm posting, if anyone has any info on some semi-organized pickup soccer (football) games to play in, that would be great!

Thanks in advance for the help, guys.

Have not heard of many sports bars but then I anyway do not know much about it. The loud music part is true most of the times. And welcome to Indiamike.

I dunno; I like to (in India) hang around in shall we say regular working man's dens myself, not usually loud music there. Nor sports TV, in the ones I visited in Hyderabad. Have written on a few down in Abids before; but doubt if they'd hold all that much for you, then. (But at just a notch higher and generally in India, to have some sports show running or at least in one of the rooms would be quite common. You could probably ask the staff for a specific game if there's not too much general attention being paid. A notch beyond that, and it would again probably be not so common.)

Anyway, those Burrp sites can make for a good start to get you going, depends a little per city.

I bet that "some sports show" will turn out to be cricket*, wherever you are!

Heheh, ... a specific soccer game of your choice?! If anything is on at all, you'd probably end up watching something like a Bolton vs. Stoke city match!

* which, admittedly, is likely to become the most watched sport on the planet by the year 2020, when the Indian population pushes 20 billion.

Very likely, of course; hey, you do, after all, find yourself in India (I think e.g. hockey is getting pretty big there, as well?)

Well, I didn't mean to suggest Arsenal will be likely to throw a match for you then-and-there just because you feel like it

But the way I know India, as said, if no one's adamantly following what's on, I imagine (I'm not into sports) if you just ask can it be changed to another channel where I know this-or-that game's on, that might well work, in fact they may be delighted to do so for you as a guest to their country and bar. Just talking to people may be really something, folks, anywhere in the world, and they generally won't tend to bite. Before you know it, you'll now be watching whatever you asked for with a whole bunch of new-found and enthusiastic (possibly overly so) pals for the time being.

(Now return the next day and I wouldn't at all be surprised if the channel gets automatically switched for you!)

Y'r most welcome, find my reflections on it here & onwards in that thread: Cheap Hotels in Hyderabad. It's a bit of my usual rambling along, but try and distill the gist out of it somewhere along the line (More precise directions do follow in a later post there.) This refers to 2.5 years ago, mind, can't tell you if those places exist still.

Nope. If anything, hockey is getting gradually smaller there. Cricket is just smothering the life out of other sports.

No, but Barcelona just might! . Or any number of other teams around the world that are far more attractive to watch! But instead, one is fed on garbage that is EPL (for the most part). The programming is not based on any surveys of the preferences of the viewers, AFAIK. Rather it's seemingly based on the logic that if people are fed on garbage, and nothing but, in time they'll get used to it, -- and might learn to like it even!
