Must see, do, eat: 2 days in Hyderabad - advice?
I will be in Hyderabad for a full Sat/Sun in Sept. I am an American who has been living in Calcutta for almost two years, so although I am a foreigner, I am okay with getting around and trying to find places in India. I am looking for advice on what to see, do and eat in Hyderabad, but I have only two days. What are the things, places, foods I should not miss? I will be staying near the Hi-Tech area. Thanks!

Some other restaurants to check out:
Trendy Indian (but still good): Zaffron Exotica, Siaa Good Punjabi: Angeethi, Punjabi by Nature, Kebabs and Curries Good Western: N Grill and Bar, Fusion 9, F Bar and Grill Sunday Brunch: Novotel and Marriott are the best...I prefer Marriott as the food is better. Pubs: 10 Downing, Firangi Pani, Irish Pub at Sheraton Kakatiya Clubs: Excess, Liquids, Touch, Ahala |

Eat:
(1) Haleem of Pista House near Charminar (or from any of their distribution outlets) or/& of Sarvi Bakery opposite Care Hospital in Banjara Hills. (2) Mutton Biryani of Paradise at Secunderabad or/& Hyderabad House at Road No. 3 in Banjara Hills (not the same at their other outlets). (3) Pathar Ghost of Bade Miyan of Upper Tank Bund (from the original one) or of Babu Khan Mall at Somajiguda (more cleaner place). (4) Rayalseema (Andhra) Food of Rayalseema Ruchulu at Shanti Nagar - watch out, it is potent. (5) Breakfast of Idlis/Dosas/Vadas/Uttapams/? of Chutneys near Nagarjuna Circle in Banjara Hills (it is no good in Jubilee Hills). There are many more but these are Iconic ... |

This is not for the faint-hearted and does not belong to the Eat section. It is better placed in See section:
Visit any liqour vend or wine shop as they are called here. See a person walk into the shop, place an order at the counter for a small bottle of whiskey (quart as it is called here) and plastic pouch of water. Then watch him pay for it and then right there and then, he downs the whole quart (180 ml) of 43 % v/v whiskey in one neat shot, bite the polythene from the edge of the pouch and drink the water. Next he walks out of the shop on to his daily grind ... Amazing is to see guys do it at 11 am in the morning. Wow, what capacity!!!!! Incredible Hyderabad. Hats off to all those here. |

Salarjung is ok if you have enough time. I do not find it impressive enough to include in a 2 day visit.
Its as uncared for as most museums in India but atleast those museums have something unique in terms of treasures from ancient and middle ages in India. I found salarjung mostly 150 to 300 year old bric-a-brac. Much better collection of such objects can be found in many other museums all over the world. |

For me, even the charminar was a big put off...retreated back immediately with same enthusiasm with which I had gone there

You can take a daily city tour of hydrabad which will show you all places listed above by other members. Take it on saturday, by evening you can come back. For daily tour you should come to afzal gunj area there you can get many operators.
Eat at paradise hotel(for biriyani), dadoos sweet house (for all kinds of deserts) secundrabad. |
