Hyderabad Metro Rail starts in 2 years

The long-awaited Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), a Rs. 8,760-crore metro rail project, to ease the traffic congestion in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad , was cleared by the Government on Saturday.

A 12-km-long stretch of the proposed 66.39-km-long metro rail line connecting Miyapur to Khairatabad is proposed to be made operational by March 2009.

Here is another fan of this great MANAGER. Delhi metro is a runaway success. Our company had done underground GSM & CDMA connectivity for DMRC and every executive involved sings ballads of praise.
One lazy afternoon last winter I was waiting at the metro station near our place to recieve a guest. I noticed that the atmosphere prevailing at the station had a magical air. Every person changed as soon as he/she entered the metro station. The same guy who would have jumpped the queue at a bus stop or for that matter anywhere stood patiently in the queue at the ticket counter. A litterbug wouldn't even drop a speck of dandruff on the platform.

Sounds promising. Hyderabad has some dreadful traffic.

Captain, did the Andhra government issue a statement in response yet?

The present Andhra Govt. is perceived to be much more corrupt than the TDP. Congress, so, to take Bigzero's signature (as I recall it)- Back to my old ways.

One of the coditions that Mr. Sridharan had placed before taking up the project was No political interference & got it.

Yes, this is true, I witnessed this first hand, during my one month stay in Hyderabad.

I won't go into details, because it'll just get me worked for nothing, but lets just say that the current congress government (in Andhra led by Dr.YSR, I don't know how corrupt the national government is at the moment) makes Ferdinand Marcos look like a baby.

yep. And apparently went to the Prime Minister when the cronyism was attempted to be started, and stopped it.

The work in Delhi had been easier as most of the metro network is on elevated lines and not much undergound. Plus wide roads and vaccant lands made construction easier. In Hyderabad it would have to be mostly underground I guess and in that case cost will also be much higher.

Juts to add to Mr. Sreedharan's profile over here, he is same man who was responsible for now famous Konkan Railway

It will start in 2009 only in everyone's dreams. It will take a minimum of 10 years to build and by that time i guess the routes will be altered to just go between the various investments in land that Maytas has around the city.

Meanwhile, the State government has asked for an apology from Mr. Sreedharan else they are threatening a defamation suit against him... all over today's papers.

Why the state Govt. wants an apology from Mr. Sreedharan? What did Mr. Sreedharan do?

What did he do?? Perhaps he spoke the truth

That is a defamatory exercise in parts of modern India.
