I am planning to take a road trip from Hyderabad to Chennai during Christmas time. I need some help on the route to take. I know that the Vijayawada route is absolutely crazy and I am not sure about that route. As I am travelling with two kids, I will break my journey for a night in between.

My intial plan was to go via Nalgonda - Addanki - Ongole - Chennai and on the return come back via Chennai - Cuddapah - Kurnool - Hyd.

Any suggestions / comments on the above plan or any alternate plans are welcome.

Uma Shankar.

You can take the Nagarjunasagar-Macherla-Satenapalle-Guntur route. The distance to Guntur would be same as the route via Vijayawada. Except for some average roads after Macherla, roads are good and quite scenic. You can halt at Nagarjunasagar on the way. From Guntur you can take the NH5 till Chennai.

Hyderabad to Chennai by Car

Hi

I like to travel in my Wagon R from Hyderabad to Chennai. would like to know, which route is better. Some people are telling,.....Hyderabad to Nagarjunasagar to Guntur to Chennai? is it the best route.

How much time it will take? I am a average speed driver...mean, i can maintain 70...not much speed.

Kindly advise.......i wanted to be in Chennai for 10 days hence, I would like to take my own car.....

Kindly advise.....

I have done seven trips up and down in the last 3 years.

The best route (10.5 hours) is as following

Hyd to Kurnool . 2.5 hours
Kurnool to Cudappah 3 hours
Cudappah to Renigunta 2 hours
Renigunta to Chennai 2 hours

30 minutes for Breakfast in Kurnool and 30 minutes for Lunch in Cudappah

The above time is calculated as I tried to maintain atleast 100 -110kms per hour. (Sometimes more than that too) I love my Indica.

Option B

The other alternate route is this

Hyd to Vijayawada (Really horrible traffic and roads)

Vijayawada to Chennai ,Very nice road, although not 4 lanes in all places as mentioned by others. Only in a few instances you will see 4 lanes. Rest of the places it is just 2 lanes.

Option B is a little time consuming as you tend to spend atleast 4-5 hours to cross 360 kms (Hyderabad to Vijayawada)

I personaly dont advice anyone to take Nagarjunasagar - Guntur route.

Do come back to me if you need more clarifications.

I did this trip last December. While going, I went thru Nalgonda, Guntur, Ongole route and on the way back, I came back via Ongole, Addanki, Macherla, Sagar. I personally liked the Sagar route as it was less crowded that the Vijayawada - Hyd route.

The cuddapah route mentioned by bsprasad is also very good and is less crowded. However we have to keep in mind that after the recent floods, we don't know the current status of the roads in all three options. Let us see if someone who has been in these routes in the recent past posts any update.

Hyderabad - Chennai Road Trip

Thanks Prasad and Rumasan

Some of them are suggesting Kurnool route will have still issues like road and other things because of recent floods.

Some people are suggesting Hyderabad - Sagar, adanki, ongole, Chennai. Still confused.

Most of them are NOT suggesting Hyd to Vijaywada route since it is congested and crowded.

Can some one give more places connecting above route. I do not want struck somewhere? i plan to leave at 5.00 AM and positively to reach by 6.00 PM.

Alright,

After talking with couple of regular travelers, It looks like the Hyd, Kurnool, Cudappah road is completely restored and hence you can take that road.

Regards

B.S.Prasad

If you need any more details do let me know.

Smile Hyderabad to Chennai - My feedback on 2 routes you can consider

I travelled from chennai to hyderabad on 22nd Jan 2010. We started from BHEL around 6.10 am and took the route

Hyd -> Sagar -> Macherla -> Neharikalu -> Addanki -> Ongole -> Nellore -> Gudur -> Chennai

Travel time was 13 hours with Breakfast and Lunch break.

Distance: BHEL, Hyd to Chennai Koyambedu : 670 KM

BHEL, HYD to Sagar - 170 KM
Sagar to Addanki - 170 KM (via Macherla, Neharikalu)
BHEL, HYD to Addanki - 340KM
Addanki to Chennai - 330 KM (VIA NH5)

Toll Charges - 5 Toll posts upto chennai (Rs.45,35,25,20,30)

Breakfast @ Punnami Resorts of AP Tourism at Sagar. Serene place with some nice food. Spent 40 minutes here.

Lunch @ Ongole. KB restaurant near Ongole bus stand. This place is 2 KM from the NH5. You need to take the road that leads to Ongole from NH5. Nice restaurant with some tasty food. Spent an hour here.

Return Journey: I tried a friend's advice and took the Addanki -> Piduguralla -> Nalgonda -> NArketpalli -> Hyd route and paid the price. The objective is basically to reach the NH5. The return route is shorter by 20 km but the route from Addanki to Hyd that i choose to return is full of dense traffic especially the last 100 km. DONT CHOOSE THIS ROUTE ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU TRAVEL BY NIGHT. 50 KM OF SINGLE ROAD FROM NARKETPALLI MAKES LIFE TERRIBLE AND THREATENING. SPECIALLY IF YOU TRAVEL WITH FAMILY.

Sagar Road is far better with less pot holes and much lesser traffic. Downside if you travel by night would be the absence of villages which makes it difficult if you breakdown. For day time travel, the best route to chennai as I observed is:

HYD -> Sagar -> Macherla -> Durgi -> Karempudi -> Addanki -> Ongole -> Nellore -> chennai

NOTE: Its a shame of the district administration of AP for not keeping direction boards to junctions. I would have easily missed the road but for the help of some passersby whom we kept asking throughout the journey. GOD SAVE THE NON TELUGU SPEAKING TRAVELLERS WHO ARE REAYY AT CROSSROADS WITH THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF AP

Lunch Option: GHAR restaurant annexed with Bharat Petroleum 25 Km before Ongole comes on your left when you travel from chennai to Hyderabad is a very good option for lunch. This place has a beautiful restaurant which serves good food at affordable price, has a nice playing area for kids (my 2 daughters loved the swing and slides here) and you can fill fuel too. You may consider this option for a quick grub specially for those who want to avoid entering into Ongole for food.

I am pleased to offer more information on my fresh experience travelling from Hyd - Chennai and back.

I drove from Chennai to Hyderabad during the first week of this month. The route I took this time was the same as last time. Nellore - Ongole - Addanki - Macherla - Sagar - Secunderabad. I started from Chennai at 8:30 AM on a sunday morning and stopped at the reliance outlet (nellore outskirts) for a coffee. Reached Ongole around 1 PM for lunch. The road till Addanki is good. The road from Addanki to Macherla is bad in many places and there are hundreds of potholes. Route from Sagar to Hyderabad is phenomenal.

If you are driving a private vehicle, then there is no permite required for the route. However, I am not sure about driving (even a private vehicle) for an extended period of time in another state. You can check with the local RTO office or even an agent to see if you need to obtain an NOC.

Have a great drive to Hyd.

I would still prefer Chennai - Renigunta - Cudappah - Kurnool - Hyderabad route as I have used it more than 10 times. But hey, that's me...

You don't need NOC for driving your own (Private Vehicle) in other states for a period of 90 days from the day of your entry. I have taken my vehicle (AP Registered) back and forth and I have driven that vehicle across the country. I never had any problems what so ever anywhere. I have used my vehicle for a extended period too in other states. For example, I drove my AP registered car in Chennai for more than 1.5 years.

With Warm Regards
