Hyderabad - Chennai Road Trip
I am planning to take a road trip from Hyderabad to Chennai during Christmas time. I need some help on the route to take. I know that the Vijayawada route is absolutely crazy
and I am not sure about that route. As I am travelling with two kids, I will break my journey for a night in between. My intial plan was to go via Nalgonda - Addanki - Ongole - Chennai and on the return come back via Chennai - Cuddapah - Kurnool - Hyd. Any suggestions / comments on the above plan or any alternate plans are welcome. Uma Shankar. |

You can take the Nagarjunasagar-Macherla-Satenapalle-Guntur route. The distance to Guntur would be same as the route via Vijayawada. Except for some average roads after Macherla, roads are good and quite scenic. You can halt at Nagarjunasagar on the way. From Guntur you can take the NH5 till Chennai.

I have done seven trips up and down in the last 3 years.
The best route (10.5 hours) is as following Hyd to Kurnool . 2.5 hours Kurnool to Cudappah 3 hours Cudappah to Renigunta 2 hours Renigunta to Chennai 2 hours 30 minutes for Breakfast in Kurnool and 30 minutes for Lunch in Cudappah The above time is calculated as I tried to maintain atleast 100 -110kms per hour. (Sometimes more than that too) I love my Indica. Option B The other alternate route is this Hyd to Vijayawada (Really horrible traffic and roads) Vijayawada to Chennai ,Very nice road, although not 4 lanes in all places as mentioned by others. Only in a few instances you will see 4 lanes. Rest of the places it is just 2 lanes. Option B is a little time consuming as you tend to spend atleast 4-5 hours to cross 360 kms (Hyderabad to Vijayawada) I personaly dont advice anyone to take Nagarjunasagar - Guntur route. Do come back to me if you need more clarifications. |

I did this trip last December. While going, I went thru Nalgonda, Guntur, Ongole route and on the way back, I came back via Ongole, Addanki, Macherla, Sagar. I personally liked the Sagar route as it was less crowded that the Vijayawada - Hyd route.
The cuddapah route mentioned by bsprasad is also very good and is less crowded. However we have to keep in mind that after the recent floods, we don't know the current status of the roads in all three options. Let us see if someone who has been in these routes in the recent past posts any update. Uma Shankar. |

Hyderabad - Chennai Road Trip
Thanks Prasad and Rumasan
Some of them are suggesting Kurnool route will have still issues like road and other things because of recent floods. Some people are suggesting Hyderabad - Sagar, adanki, ongole, Chennai. Still confused. Most of them are NOT suggesting Hyd to Vijaywada route since it is congested and crowded. Can some one give more places connecting above route. I do not want struck somewhere? i plan to leave at 5.00 AM and positively to reach by 6.00 PM. |

Alright,
After talking with couple of regular travelers, It looks like the Hyd, Kurnool, Cudappah road is completely restored and hence you can take that road. Regards B.S.Prasad If you need any more details do let me know. |
