Cheap Hotels in Hyderabad

Hey Guys,

Done a search but would like some more advice about accommodation!

Lonely Planet lists a few in my price range in the Abids Area.

Hotel Sunhail and Hotel Sri Brindavan (Perhaps even Hotel Jaya International but seems a little bit more expensive).

Has anyone stayed at any of these hotels, or have recommendations for others around 300rps for a single (Im just 1 by myself), that has a social atmosphere where i could meet fellow travellers or locals.

Cheers in advance

I just stayed in Hotel Suhail, last March or so.

Found it good value for what it is; giant (double) room, reasonably clean, for, er, 375 Rs. by myself off the top of my head. Balcony (facing a blind wall but oh well, they didn't put it there), TV included. Couple of cupboards, table (two in fact, one holding the TV) and a few chairs, sort of thing. OK and large bathroom, with shower and hot water (and western toilet) mind.

You might want to give them a ring ahead, the nr. is in LP.

Sorry, still need to get pics up and stuff. It's nothing to get overly excited about mind; but for that price and in a city like that, good value indeed; and so were the Hyderabadis I met there surprised that anything like it existed for the price.

I reckon you could do a lot worse.

On the meeting fellow travelers front though, apart from the lounge (typically largely unused except for some bored staff) there's no real area to meet one another; I wasn't really looking for this, so have no real comments. I don't think Hyderabad is the kind of place that's "on the trail" enough to merit these sort of "traveler's" hangouts really; but there may exist some. If so, I'm unaware of them. There were some fellow tourists staying alright, we just didn't get close for some reason (and most of them on the move I think); you conceivably might.

Suhail is more the kind of place that attracts traveling Indian businessmen and the likes on a budget, which come a dime a dozen.

nb There's another place in Abids that was recommended to me by Steven_Ber, I think it's called the Shanthi... (or the Shri...? Yes, more likely.* Sorry, don't have my books on me) something. Similar deal and price range I think, he said it was quite good (and cheaper, according to him, in fact). I noticed later that unless he and I have two places mixed up (the directions matched though), this is also listed in LP's '07 edition. I rang them up but they were full; so I ended up at Suhail's instead. (LP does suggest ringing ahead is a good idea as accommodation in Hyderabad can be tight.)

* ... And so I see only know, that might well be your Sri Brindavan I guess. Sorry, again I can't check right now.

btw For mingling and if you're into bars, you won't meet too many (if any) whiteys here mind:

Suhail is in a back street just off the back end of the GPO (general post office). It's called, er, what was it.

Anyway that GPO is on Abid's circle. Facing that (and facing south I think), if you follow the street leading off towards the station to your right (so west), you'll come to a main street running sideways just in front of the station. A little to your left here, and to the left hand side, there's a bar tucked away underneath a building in something of a parking lot. It's OK, typical darkened kind of sinner's den. It serves as a hotel too upstairs come to think of it, you might actually enquire about prices here (such places can be noisy though).

More fun I thought was if you go around the left past the GPO, so heading towards Suhail (south again); but not go into the alley to the right that it's in; continue a little on instead, and take the first to the left; now walk on a little (not ten minutes), to your left there will be a dodgy bar with a red entrance and a stairway going up. This place is really OK, there's little bullshit going on, they do some more-than-decent food (mind that Andhra hotness though!), and it's not even darkened to make you feel like the sinner that you are.

The street it's on is called the same as the one Suhail's on when you walk up to it, however it's really a different street I think. (Yes, India, don't ask me. That Suhail street seems to pretty much wind around the area anyway.)

(And thanks to Capt. who just happened to accidentally park here and so drew my attention to the place.)

I found Abids otherwise a fun area to hang around in; there's lots of good shopping to be done (notably clothes, books, music), and with very little hassle to speak of.

So this would be if you head towards the station along Nampally Station Road, then go left on Mukarramjahi Road, then just a little to your left and on your left hand side.

This is on Hanuman Tekdi Road (or according to Lonely Planet at least); however as noted if you walk up there this way, there's a sign saying it's actually Troop Bazaar, the same street that Hotel Suhail a little earlier to your right is on. I have the name of the place, but somewhere else yet again; anyway you can hardly miss it. Smoking is allowed in this place (or was earlier this year), quite the exception. There's a few more bars down this street I think.

Capt. Mahajan told me if you go from Abids towards the Old Town along Abid Road (turning into JN Road, or Jawaharlal Nehru Road of course, right past Abids Circle -- all the way to the Old Town should be something like a half hour on foot I think, although I never tried it), a while down (and to your right hand side if I recall?) you should come by a bar named Gokul's; supposed to be something of a Hyderabad institution. I never made it here, alas. Next time!
