Unfortunately you won't find anything approaching what you are used to calling a good service. Power cuts and other unknown causes result in frequent dropouts and it's not known here as "fraudband" for nothing...
We use MTNL here in Delhi and it's highly unreliable; even on the most expensive service the speed is way slower than I'm used to in the UK. Perhaps Hyderabad is better served, good luck getting the best that you can.

As others have said, it really depends on where you live...you may not have a choice. I've had Sify for over two years with never a problem (but the connection speed is only 256k). I signed up with BSNL for a 1 megabyte DSL connection and it's usually not working more than it is working. I've decided to keep both and use Sify as my backup when BSNL isn't working. Some of my coworkers have Beam Cable...and once it's up and working, it seems to be pretty reliable.

Reliance in India has recently started wireless broadband service in 35cities. They promise speeds upto 3.1MBPS, and the good things are (a)it is not dependent on power (b) it works throughout the country - 3.1mbps in 35 cities, 144kbps elsewhere.
I subscribed to it a couple of days ago, and so far, it's been good. You can purchase the USB modem (Rs3500) at most Reliance world outlets (listing on their website www.rcom.co.in), and it takes about a day to activate. Thereafter, its as simple as plug-n-play. Tata Indicom has also launched a similar service (Photon+), but I don't have much feedback on that. I hope this is useful. - JK |

I have been using BSNL for a few years now. Very reliable, does not go down often but it's slow.

Using airtel in Hyderabad for the last nine months.
Total downtime about half an hour.

Also, as of now, only 35 cities in India are covered under their Broadband+ - which gives speeds of upto 3.1mbps. Their website has maps of areas in each of these cities that are covered. So make sure that most of the areas you are visiting are covered, before buying one. The internet does work at places outside these 35 cities too, but you'll get much lower speeds (upto 144kbps, but actual speeds are pathetic). Hope this helps. I know it's a little confusing, so do post in case of more questions - Jk |
