Hyderabad - Known as the Pearl City of India, Hyderabad is famous for its copper artifacts, beautiful monuments, mosques, Mughal and colonial architecture.

1-day or 2-day trip from Hyderabad for foreigner?

I've been asking co-workers here for day trips I could take and I keep hearing Warangal or Nagarjuna Sagar. The thousand pillar temple is at the first and a big dam and some Buddha stuff at the second as I understand. Surprised they haven't been suggested since its what I keep being told by the locals. Of course Hampi is always mentioned as well. I don't know which of the first two would be best to see though since I haven't made up my mind yet.

Warrangal and nagarjuna sagar are nothing very special.

warrangal is ok if you want to see an Indian medium sized town with a temple in it.

nagarjunasagar is a dam with a lake(an island on it with some budhist archeological findings excavated from the area which was submerged under the lake).

Not a big loss if you dont see either of the places.

Both are day trip worthy BTW not overnight trips.

srisailam is slightly better than nagarjunasagar.
The hilly scenery is nice.

I think Srisailam is out due to damage from the floods. Read in the paper they've got some cleaning up to do for a while. Been real bad in the south. Probably best to stay clear of that area for a while and let them recover the best they can. News hasn't been good. Nagarjunasagar survived the worst of it.

Ellora is about 30 km from Aurangabad, and Ajantha is about 100 km. They could be done in one day, but it would cut half of pleasure. It's too hot in the midday, so I would better try to visit Ellora one morning - Kailasa temple is really must see, it's unbelivable - and it's better visit as early as possible - becouse later there are too many tourists. Later you can explore all the other caves without any haste. On your way back to Aurangabad I would visit Daulatabad fort, it's really interesting. Or you can go to Aurangabad, have a good lunch, have a rest and go to Daulatabad later to catch the light before the sunset - it's really pleasant place, I've been there last Nov after 16PM, and it was great!!!
The next day I would start to Ajantha as early as possible and explore all the caves - the painting is sooo unusual and beautiful, and a good guide could add lots of pleasure to the excursion. After the lunch back to Hyderabad I would have a look at the city - Bibi-ka-Maqbara is great before the sunset too Than I would catch a train and the next morning would arrive to Hyderabad.

It's a pity trains are fool. By road it's too far.

SURYALANKA, beach town maintained by APTDC can be a good choice if you like beaches,

... Just pointing again to Outlook Traveller's Weekend Breaks From Hyderabad, http://traveller.outlookindia.com/bookhome.aspx. It's a good Indian guidebook series. While that title is listed as being out of stock, you should be able to find it in bookstores on the ground still.

Ah, OK. That specific title I don't know (I did notice it was still widely available just earlier this year, when it was already out of stock.)

Advice come too late, but Badami is pretty magical - the Mahakutta mandir just out of town is without doubt the most spirit infused temple I have ever visited in India - if you dont get there this trip, then put it on your list for later - I took train to Solapur, had overnight there, then following day there is train or Bus to get to Badami... The architectural heritage of Bijapur is really worth exploring enroute - I think it is Saturday that the tribal market is on in Bijapur - town is full of the amazingly colourful local people (heck, forgot what group they belong to). Really recommend you put that area on your itinerary for a future trip (it is a good way of getting to Hampi too - but I would recommend at least 5 days if your were doing a round trip from Hyderabad - You could probably do Hyderabad - Solapur by train then connect to a bus straight to Bijapur for overnight and following day bus or train to Badami - have 2 nights and full day to explore Badami, then onto Hampi, couple of days and train from hospet back to Hyderabad (if possible). Enjoy.

Hi all

Thanks for all of the suggestions and feedback. I've decided to just chill out in Hyderabad for those days - simpler and less stressful. I've been overly lazy so far and haven't gotten out to any of the sights of the city itself, so I'll take those three days for that. I've booked a tour with Jonty of Detours on one of the days - about time I learnt some Indian cooking techniques.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to do Hampi on another trip.
