Is it because:

1. they want the attention
2. they are completely clueless
3. they are telling the culture, where women dress modestly, to f*ck off!

why do they do it?
1. It is hot.

2. It is important to get Vitamin D for physical and mental
health - otherwise risk depression and overweightedness in middle age.

3. If you got it - flaunt it!

Everything in moderation, Nick. They're saying now that lack of Vitamin D is a leading cause of Colon cancer and other nasties.

Certainly bathing in the sun all day is a past time of yor .... but so should be the act of total embundlement in the heat - 24/7.

.... happy medium in this all one would think!?

Hijab wearing soccer girl is all the rage in Canada these days.

Slightly off topic but as the world gets smaller - dress issues appear to get larger .......

The cultural insult is often blown out proportion. Indian's are not as easily offended as forums and guidebooks will have you believe.

So I've always thought let ladies wear what they want (within reason of course) as long as they personally can deal with the stares and comments, I see no reason for people to conform to supposed "norms"

India is changing fast, it's no longer a place where everyone will look down on the way you dress.

I can't understand how the Indians can be offended by the way women dress when all the ladies in sarees show a bare midriff and cleavage. The men openly urinate in the streets, which is something I have not seen anywhere but India.

ah yes....the dichotomy that is India!

as for peeing, I've seen it here on the Chicago expressways when traffic is at a total standstill and the guys are pissing at the side of the road! and they weren't Indians!

Lady naagaa saadhviis already exist. They stay on their own separately in remote jungles and do not generally mingle. Certain festive occassions they are allowed to mingle with the male naagaas, but mostly they stay aloof from society as well as other saadhus.

Quite a number of them possess some siddhis or minor divine powers....

They have never come to the kumbh shaahi snaan till date.

Good post lotusblossom . . . India is changing fast . . . but perhaps not as fast as some of us who travel there might like. And of course it's happening in the big cities first; as it most often does in the West. I remember driving into a small town in the midwest of America, about fifteen years ago. I was driving a Toyota . . . and the midwest is Ford country . . . the looks I got . . .

but we're talking about clothes . . . in general I agree with cyberhippie, as long as people can deal with the stares and comments, why not? But often, and I've seen it with western women wearing both skimpy clothing and even once in traditional Indian dress, it goes beyond staring, beyond comments, to physical contact. While India is changing, like it or not, clothes (or lack of/choice of) do say something about you, as I believe they do in the west. Maybe a part of the problem is that the clothes some of us wear in India say something to many Indian's that isn't what we meant to say.

Probably many of the female tourists are ignoramt about the culture and the way common indian dress up, and that's why they be wearing the same clothes which they wear in thier country. But i am sure after some starry looks, they would have realised that everything is not okay.

Agreed Darmabum.

However can I just add that attacking someone physically and blaming their mode of dress, is just about the lowest excuse imaginable.

You knew that anyway though

I think men and women should be allowed to wear as little or as much clothes as they want to wear. "Modesty" is subjective and so who are we to judge others? India is great, in that, I don't believe that there are any modesty laws on the books. But, people who wear less than the norm, shouod be prepared to deal with undue attention.
