Third Sex Category Demanded

"Eunuchs in Orissa reiterated their demand for a legislation recognizing [a] third gender category to ensure them political and social rights..."

"They believe passing of such a law would also help them exercise their franchise, as under present laws though eunuchs are allowed to vote, they are referred to as males and are often in fact not listed at all.

Known as "Hijras", in popular parlance in India, they are either males castrated at puberty or people born with genital malformation.

There are no official estimates of India's eunuch population, but they are said to number around 500,000."

From this article.

Is there any country in the world where a 'third gender' is recognised.

I haven't heard of any except for one. In most countries it's the biological gender you're born with, and of my Thai students told me in Thailand it's the gender you change to. The surgery is quite common and they do it so well she said (men) have to be careful when they go there because you really can't tell.

Actually, there are some countries that will recognize sex changes (i.e. you can officially become the other gender after the operation), including Canada and Iran (believe it or not).

As for having a third, neutral (?) gender, I doubt any country has got that.

These Lady boys are called Katoyes in Thailand .They look like real women. But i could always spot them .The way i could make out if that person was a female/ladyboy was that if a female was of exceptional beauty they were ladyboys .
I am ofcourse not saying that all beautiful women in Thailand had a gender change operation.

Trans-sexuals do have their place under the Indian sun. Members of the kinnar or hijra community earn their livelihood by singing and dancing at people's homes in case of a joyous event like marriage. Many of them are commercial sex workers. The kind of social sanction they have achieved is documented be the fact that a few hijras managed to win elections. The case of Shabnam mausi comes to mind - a kinnar who became an MLA. Ironical, in a country where homosexuality is outlawed.

The eunuchs getting recognised in India as a third sex, before gay rights, will be something to laugh at.

interestingly enough, both hijras and homosexuals were known and accepted and/or tolerated in ancient india, before abrahamic religions came here.

Here they are called nain or nine people (DD?). And, from a distance, they are very confusing as it takes a second or third look to check that they are not women.

---now I'm learning the style of dress and behavior: a pretty 'girl' dressed n rather flamboyant clothes, maybe a group, going from shop to shop and asking money...

There is yet another 'inclination', which I believe is found in Pacific Islands --- where some boys grow up liking female-style dress, and taking more interest in 'tradionaly' female passtimes. They are considered quite an asset around the house! IIRC, these people form relationships with heterosexual men.

Whoa --- so many kinds of people in the world. And room for all if only we could banish bias and discrimination.

My NZ mate told me that in some places in the Pacific Islands, where there are 4 boys already in the family, and the 5th is also a boy, it will be brought up as a girl. I don't know whether to believe this, but interesting if it is.

In Bihar, recently a group of Hijras was engaged by the local civic body to blackmail people so as to force them to pay up tax dues out of sheer embarrassment.
