Hey, it's just the creative freedom of the architect, isn't it ?
I am one, and I would suggest flower pots on the lower part... Something similar almost happened during my time in India... If the staircase would have been built as the mason wanted it to do, the client maybe wouldn't have survived the first step out of his bedroom ![]() |

OK, so the big mistake we're all making is that that is a staircase, when, actually, it is just a decorative feature!
![]() The building-in-progress opposite my house has a first-floor balcony. It's wall is just one row of bricks which collapsed into the street the day after it was built. They simply put it back again. My meagre understanding is that the strength in a brick structure comes from the way the bricks are laid, and that the mortar really only fills the gaps --- I'm going to be very careful what I lean against in the future! |

depends on the mortar... cement mortar (as usually used in India) combined with well watered bricks should not be a problem... but if the water dries too fast, they don't stick together...
Side note: these things don't happen only in India... I have a small collection of funny site pictures... from Spain and Greece ![]() |

I got it. It's to trick thieves at night.
They climb the stairs, and BANG! |

Or maybe it's to confuse the taxman, the real entry being hidden.
"You haven't paid your taxes" "Yeah, come upstairs" |

This could be a trick to stupefy potential attackers, who stay mesmerised under the stairs, while the defensors pour boiling oil on them. |

If I were a rich man Badada di di di dum . . . there would be one long stair case just going up and one even longer coming down and one leading nowhere ... just for show Folks, you are looking at the third one. Take a stroll to the other side and presto, you will see the ones going just up and just down ![]() |
