shopping bonus or not?

I just picked up the two parcels we posted ourselves from Jodhpur, 2 long months ago, and the funny thing is that one package contained an item none of us recalls ever seeing!!!!

We shopped one day at a wonderful fixed price handicraft emporium in Jodhpur and bought a beautiful applique bedspread, cushion covers, another single bed bedspread with lovely applique elephants... etc. Took the plastic wrapped lot home and packed them with the rest of the stuff to post without opening the wrapping.

Unwrapped it here and lo and behold there was a beautiful red embroidered wall hanging folded up with the stuff......

Either - it was a gift from the shop, it was accidentally included, or we paid for it without realising we had bought it... Entirely possible as the whole experience was draining and exhausting as shopping in India for handicrafts, textiles and clothing tends to be...

We could have quite easily not noticed extra on the credit card payment.

Just thought I'd post this funny little experience - the thing looks lovely on our wall anyway!

Congratulations on your wall hanging: I bet it becomes your favourite thing, over the things you knew you were buying!

I'd say it is one of the most fun things one can do in India! But then I wander round kitchen shops for fun.

Something similar happened to me when I send two packages home:

My research assistant spent half a day to pack the boxes, sew them up with cloth and seal them with some red stuff. When they arrived in the Netherlands, I found a pair of men's pants, and a very shiny green girl's salwar. My assistant swears he didn't put them there (why would he....) and the package came sealed.. Its still a mystery how they ended up there, but I managed to sell the salwar suit at a flea market in Amsterdam

Probably in an Indian sort of way, the latter - the only time I've got a gift is when I payed too much and the vendor included a sympathetic 'evener-upper'. Once I payed way too much and got several gifts and an honorary dinner to boot.

These days, more often than not, I get the inauspicious look-away hand shake and then quickly shown shown a door.
