sacred cows

one thing impressed me about in india, is the foddering to the so called "sacred cow", eating garbage with total disinterest, how they can survive on it and why they are not treated better?

Some people treat them bad but many go out of there way to see that cows are fed and watered. I know of several places where if your in the shop/restuarant at the right time a cow or bull will poke their head in to get their daily meals. It's quite funny actually, right on time every day!!
So to some these animals are indeed sacred or at least worth feeding!!

Used to live near a Jain temple on Nepean Sea road in Bombay.
During the school exam season, a guy with a cow used to stand outside the temple with a pile of fodder, and people used to pay to feed the cow.

I thought it was an excellent way of making a living... making people overpay for your expenses.

The cow was soon overfed, and disinterested.

oh, people do feed the cows like the way CH says. One used to amble up to my Grandma's place and moo and scare the living sh*t out of us sleeping kids at approximately the same time. All the vegetable skins that day used to get shoved into it's mouth.

It soon became discerning, flaring it's nostrils a little at unanted vegetable skin.

Its amazing how people make money out of religion! A whole economy surrounds each temple, especially those of any size (Kapali Temple in Mylapore supports whole streets of it; some of the really big temples probably support whole areas).

There are the flower girls. The puja items and murthis. The more expensive bronze shops (hoping to get a tourist or two). There are the prasadam items, the fruit, the little terracotta lamps and wicks, the kumkum and vibuti powders, maybe kolam too. The garland makers and the book shops. The fortune tellers. The people selling food to give to the fish in the tank....
