Hi friends,
It s good to see this old thread is back once again. I was at Darjeeling that day (well, Rakhi from ‘everyone’ around me is ….. so it is better to stay away from the area ) hence my sister arranged the formal procedure in advance.

As someone asked in this thread do you know if such festivals of relationship like Rakhi / Bhai phota (bhai duja) etc. are also popular in other parts of the globe? Well, that’ll be interesting information.

16th Aug was rakhi purnima (full moon) when people from all over Darjeeling gathers at Mahakal Mandir for Pujas. It is an unusual experience for me. We went up to Mahakal Mandir and experienced how important it is. Gathering of hundreds of people (in spite of rain and all was really amazing. I’ll post some photographs and that’ll help you to understand it is a very popular festival at Darjeeling.

Rakhi certainly went on around our area, Somnath - as for all over the world, I guess wherever Indians are settled, for sure it is probably still going on there too.

Aishah thanks for your reply . Rajasthan, Punjab these places are known for some big events on Rakhi. I was searching on web regarding similar festivals among non-Indians but looks like this is something unique. Hmmmm…..

When I started college my mom asked me to make all the boys here rakhi brothers, I guess that's one way to keep your daughter from dating.

Interestingly I got some really good brother figures out of it, considering I have no "blood" brothers. The best present I got was a pair of payals from India I looooove them.

Hi,

Now some serious issues about this festival…... how female foeticide is affecting our festivals and disturbing the balance of the society:

So sad, Somnath, and so maddening too I'm so glad my son has a sister to celebrate Rakhi with. That story brought a tear to my eye, how long can such horrors go on?:
Quote:
But not this time with the 12 girls, inspired by a television serial condemning foeticide in Rajasthan, deciding to tie rakhi on the hands of 250 boys regardless of caste.
“No brother should go without rakhi on Wednesday whether he is real or distant relative”, Puja Kanwar, a young girl said.
Moolsingh Bhati said though he has a sister many of his friends used to feel lonely on the festival.
“Now with the collective decision of the girls, the brothers are happy that they would get to celebrate the festival,” he said.
I guess this is a start [wiping tears]

Because of the time difference, I am waiting to call my brothers - one is is Wales, and the other moved back to India. I think Rakhi is such a sweet special festival. I hope my kids continue it all their lives
