And I have 2 Rakhi brothers, nominated themselves nearly 9 years back! So I do this ritual as well - I give them a box of sweets as well as the bands for their wrists, and I get a brand new 50 rupee note and usually some sort of material to make a salwar kameez.

Wow, I haven't celebrated this for over 40 years ! googling it, I find lots of commercialization of this - e-cards, gift sites and so on - its to be expected no doubt. The Draupadi /Krishna legend about this is a really sweet one. For a contemporary look, the UCLA edu site has a interesting take on many aspects - including the usual suspect - patriarchy - with the ceremony having both enforcing AND weakening aspects!
http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/southasia...ls/Raksha.html I'll make a point of watching the B4UExpress program on B4UMusic of the day. For special days, like Independence Day or Diwali they usually run a "special" where they go out of the studio and talk to young adults out on the streets and college cafes so perhaps they'll do one here as well. -skk |

Well, it has come round again!
![]() I have been reading about Rakhi, what a wonderful festival, and a good reason for families and close friends to come together. ![]() "Happy Rakhi" - if that is something you say. |

one amusing part is that if any young boy is offerred by a girl for tying up a rakhi on his wrist, that avenue might be closed for him as far as romance is concerned !
