And I have 2 Rakhi brothers, nominated themselves nearly 9 years back! So I do this ritual as well - I give them a box of sweets as well as the bands for their wrists, and I get a brand new 50 rupee note and usually some sort of material to make a salwar kameez.

Wow, I haven't celebrated this for over 40 years ! googling it, I find lots of commercialization of this - e-cards, gift sites and so on - its to be expected no doubt. The Draupadi /Krishna legend about this is a really sweet one. For a contemporary look, the UCLA edu site has a interesting take on many aspects - including the usual suspect - patriarchy - with the ceremony having both enforcing AND weakening aspects!

I'll make a point of watching the B4UExpress program on B4UMusic of the day. For special days, like Independence Day or Diwali they usually run a "special" where they go out of the studio and talk to young adults out on the streets and college cafes so perhaps they'll do one here as well.

Well, it has come round again!

I have been reading about Rakhi, what a wonderful festival, and a good reason for families and close friends to come together.

"Happy Rakhi" - if that is something you say.

one amusing part is that if any young boy is offerred by a girl for tying up a rakhi on his wrist, that avenue might be closed for him as far as romance is concerned !

So it is not always welcomed then!

Clever preemptive strike to let someone down gently though.
