protesters to burn effigies of Richard Gere

A kiss causes protesters to burn effigies of Richard Gere. You decide if they have a case: http://in.news.yahoo.com/070416/137/6emf9.html

It's the Dalai Lama who he's suppose to kiss and make up to - isn't it?

oooer, a public display of affection!
NB Whilst I personally am mindful of taboos in other peoples cultures, this was after all an awareness campaign about a (mostly) sexually transmitted disease.
Wake up zealots!

Unbelievable. Perhaps even more strange is the caption to the photo... "Actor Richard Gere (L) kisses Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty". As if there is any doubt which one is which.

He could be wrestling her to the ground.

She looks as though he is. Maybe she was trying to steel that microphone!

Thats not a kiss, thats an armlock, or necklock or whatever.

I think the guy is strangling her. Then why are they protesting?

There's no news just a photo and a headline.

I could say it is the reason that ants swarmed all over my kitchen yesterday!

when i read the title of this post, i first saw "Kiss causes protesters to burn effigies..." and thought it was referring to the band, not the display of affection. i thought maybe big devotees of Kali were pissed about Gene Simmons' tongue action, makeup, etc. though i was wondering why it took 30+ years to arouse such ire...

Found a little bit more 'news' here: http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-04-16-voa33.cfm

In Delhi, "cheering crowds" - Mumbai, "burning pictures". What a strange planet this is.

Ah, yes, the old "white man outrages an Indian woman's modesty" protest.

Except, according to the report, the chants were "Down with Shilpa Shetty". Maybe she outraged the white man's modesty.
