Talking Police fines

Here in Goa, we are used to providing the police with pocket money.
We're always being stopped on our bikes and recently some friends were booked by some plain clothes for smoking in public. I've recently been done 500 rupees for having a non-standard horn fitted on my Enfield. This one though, is the best so far. I've just stopped laughing.
Some friends were going by train from Margao to Cochin for a few days. They had a cool bag with some snacks and a few beers for the 14 hour journey. The train departure was delayed 2 hours, so 2 of them got out a small folding table, a pack of cards and a couple of beers to pass away the time. Along came the police and booked them for, wait for it..............

setting up a bar. Fined 100 rupees each.

Yup, only in India - quite a small fine for such an offence though!

Did they get a receipt for the fine? The fine for carrying or consuming an open bottle of alcohol is about $100 in Vancouver. I have seen people getting booked for drinking beer on a platform here.

Police Fines

Similar thing happened to me and my wife last year in Goa. Travelling back from town in Goa on a scooter . Policeman flagged us down, along with other European bikers (very selective!) . Asked me for my driving licence, which I handed over to him, me thinking there would not be a problem. He told me that I needed an international driving licence to drive in Goa. I naively explained that I thought my EU driving licence was international and would be OK for Goa. After all, I had rented cars with no problem in the USA before .
He was having none of it and asked me to hand over 1800 Rupees spot fine . When I told him that we only had 200 Rs on us he said politely, "That will do nicely" and put it straight in his sky rocket! We drove off thinking we'd got off lightly, but also a bit miffed knowing that if he hadn't got us on the driving licence he'd have got us on something else!

Morale of the story............Don't carry more than 100 Rs when you're driving in Goa !!!

Yes they got a receipt.
The latest scam is to say you must have a letter from the owner saying you borrowed the bike if it's not a genuine hire. My friend refused to pay. Told them they weren't getting a penny. They said they'd have to take the bike. He handed them the keys and said "take it". They backed down and let him go. What are they going to do with someone else's Enfield sitting on the NH17?

I still believe 200 is a cheap price to pay for enjoying oneself on railway platform. Added bonus is entertaining IM forum!

A friend had a bar built in the garden of his house. He got all the permits and licenses through the "usual channels"

Customs and excise turn up one day and try to "fine" him. The reason, the bar is not IN the house but in the garden of the said house, therefor illegal!!
