Catch a stray cow; earn Rs.50

Bhopal, Aug 3 (IANS) There's Rs.50 to be had for every stray cow a person catches. That is the desperate measure the civic authorities have proposed to curb the cattle menace on Bhopal's streets!

At least 1,000 cows can be found on the roads of Bhopal on any given day, says a survey by the municipal corporation. The municipal corporation has another 1,000 cows in its sheds.

So the understaffed Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take the help of the common man to get the city rid of stray cows.

"We have stray animal-catching squads but they are proving inadequate. So we have decided to take the help of people," said a senior corporation official.

Due to a shortage of personnel in the corporation, staff from other government departments used to be engaged for catching stray animals.

"The personnel of other departments are reluctant to do the animal-catching job because they do not get any extra money. Two, the task is a bit dangerous and needs experts," said the official.

"Stray cows not only restrict the smooth flow of traffic but have many times caused road accidents," said the official. "We have forwarded our plan to the mayor and are waiting for his final approval."

Officials of the municipal corporation feel that paying Rs.50 for each animal caught will not prove to be a burden.

"We will fine the owners of the stray animals. We will use that fine to pay to those who bring stray animals to us," said the official.
