Lata Mangeshkar
Lata Mangeshkar
In bbc news I've read that famous singer Lata Mangeshkar, has turned 75.
For me, listen her voice is something that makes me feeling close to India. I remember Lata since I was a kid many years ago. Today I've spent last two hours with her songs as well as her sister Asha Bhosle's records.

May Lata Mangeshkar live to be 100 or more; but please, please, will she stop providing mournful sounding playback to heroines one-third her age????
Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to shop !

What's ironic is that Yash Chopra went with Madan Mohan's unused tunes for Veer Zaara - the same Madan Mohan whose compositions were sung by a young sensation called Lata who enthralled the audience in the 50s and 60s.I can't think of a better time for Lata Mangeshkar to retire from singing in Hindi movies with Madan Mohan as a music director. I wish her all the best!

I have no time at all for Indian cinema and the music that goes with it but... You can tell Lata Mangeshkar's age from her voice? That would surprise me! Whilst her voice continues to be ageless let her sing for any age. Or maybe it's changed since I last heard it.

Btw, Veer Zaara has been shot in Purana Qila. I noticed that by accident when I matched the pics of Veer-Zaara with that of a mosque situated in Delhi's Purana Qila. This is exactly the frame where SRK and Priety embrace each other on the posters. click for pic

Perhaps that's the reason you find nothing amiss in Lata's playback to heroines less than one-fourth her age !!Do find some time for Indian cinema music and then you may just be able to see what I mean !!

[QUOTE=Nick-H]
I think i do undrstand ur taste of music..we cannot completely say no to film music.
There are good film musics composed in popular ragas of
carnatic music. There are lot of songs based on Ananda Bhairavi and Mohanam, Hamsdhani etc..to name a few.
Well i do recomend u to listen to the music of film named DUET ( A tamil Film -music direction by AR Rehaman- it is his first venture if i am not wrong- i mean solo venture ). The film is very old and those days AR Rehman was not sooooo popular. There is song in Rag ananda Bairavi which i never can forget..
The film music played a vital role in introducing good ragas to an average music enthusiaste and atract them to classical ( hindustani or Carnatic) music through their semi classical melodies.
I am not a fan of fast numbers like 'tu cheez badi hei mast mast' type..i hate hindi pop infact..
bye for now
take care]

Roja, Sangamam, Tala[m], 1947; these ARR songs I like...Wasn't Roja his first film? I don't think I made it to the end of my GF's DVD, but I did enjoy what I saw, and that simple sweet song (Chinna china asai???) is a delight.
But it is not just the songs, it is the whole song-and-dance presentation that doesn't do much for me. Each to their own! I don't think that my tastes are going to worry any of the producers!

Hi Nick,Well Roja wasnt his first film. He did composed for Film 'Duet' much before. The song Anjali anjali pushpajanli is one great number in that. Hey u know wat, i normally avoid seeing the picturisation of my favorite songs since most of the picturisation spoil the songs. But in Roja oru velli malai picturised well.

Shimla, I agree with you . the age is showing nowadays. KJ Yesudas had made a comment a few years back that Lata Mangeshkar should consider not doing playback singing for film heroines - he was attacked for that. ( it is beginning to apply to him too nowadays...
will I get attacked now?? ) Posting Rules
