Indian hi-society marriage

Iv`e had the honor of attending one of bombay`s h-society marriages. All the whos & whos were invited.
The groom was a leading hair stylist and his bride was from some aristocrat family.
The ceremony was organized like Ford`s factory: the groom & bride were standing on a stage at the long end of the room, with one queue of people leading "in" and another one "out".
Each guest had to queue up and when finally reaching the stage, could change a smile & a few words with the couple, for not more than a few seconds, while five (!) pro photographers were taking his picture with the bride & groom.
This reception, I was told, would last 2 consecutive days!
Imagine what a torture that must be for the couple, standing on a stage for 2 days greeting people...

Food you were asking?
The dining room was on a separate floor, working around the clock serving guests after they got their 10 seconds interview...
The couple? Indian brides & grooms do not require food, they kept standing for 2 days doing their duty.

Now just imagine how the guests were dressed, wer`e talking extreme-yuppy gathering here. Some older people were dressed like kings (literally) and some yourger ones had $1000 suits, showing gold & diamonds.
At some point I felt embarrased to be wearing the best clothes I had: GAP cargo trousers and a casual long-sleeve open-neck shirt.
I asked the lady who had invited me if I was causing her social inconvenience, and her unforgettable reply was:
"As long as youre white, you can go around naked"...

Hmmmm..... tell them to check with me and I'll inform them how to have a nice, simple roof-top gatherring of a few friends with good food and music for a very modest amount of Rs

As long as youre white, you can go around naked. Joke of the day? Joke of the Decade!

You are perfectly true. Here marriage is a "Show Case" thing and more so in high society. Though there are meaningful ceremonies now a days it has become a show of wealth (I guess even in older times it was also a show a wealth).

Anyways I liked your guests comment. You should have saved your best dress and gone naked

perhaps Indians marry just for ONCE in a life time..so this event is required to be memorable. And so far as high society matter...they dont know how much us too much perhaps.
