Top 2 annoyance

Spitting??? If it was only that. This is what we wrote in 1997:

Our top two of annoyances:
1. Babe-bumping; grownup youths walking up against western females (more than once in a while also using their hands). After 10 days Mirjam found the answer; she turned around and smacked them. This is especially effective if their friends are watching; they lose a lot of face being hit by a woman.

2. Urinating on monuments. This is another thing that really annoyed us. Any slightly dark corner of virtually all the monuments, palaces and even temples you visit smells of ammoniac. OK, it's not always possible to find a public toilet in the streets (quiet difficult to be honest), but could you please stop pissing all over your national heritage?

Hans

It's a powerful ad, actually --- a young couple writing their names on a monument wall, saying everyone will know their story, whilst onlookers watch and say everyone will be ashamed of them.

Heck... I can't put over the picture, but it does work.

There may be a series, I don't know, but the one I saw yesterday focused on graffiti, and also mentioned spitting and littering. (I don't remember if it mentioned pissing )

Lets just hope it makes some people think.

Good luck trying teach any good thing to Indian people.

OTOH: there are way too many 'monuments' in India and the govt does a bad job of manitaining any of them. (Ever seen the Delhi Red Fort from the inside?)

Break them monuments down and build private schools/ bowling alleys or better still parking space!

Point there, Nick & I'gai.

Went to Kodai & the only persons chucking plastic rubbish were the tourists. & not into the bins. Apparently Kodai is also a plastic free zone.

Why only on monuments? They should stop spitting all over the place, like they do. Not just on monuments.

Its the sweeping remarks ('any', and by implication, all Indians) that I referred to.

20/80 sounds about right, though.

Not just spitting. A lot of Indians have this obnoxious habit of spewing out paan and paan masala (chewing tobacco), coloring the walls with a typical red-brown color.

Sorry friends..I am little bit pessimistic about my country as for as civic sense is concerned.

We have to wait for that day BIHAR and UP guys will stop coloring train and bus platforms. The day this sense comes to them....monument and tourist spot littering will decrease automatically.

Besides BAN on smoking in buses and trains- you can easily see bus drivers smoking in HARYANA and UTTAR PRADESH.

I have seen RAILWAY PROTECTION FORCE people smoking in trains.

What we all are discussing is about known and renowned monuments but there are many many buildings which had been distroyed by people with their super fluids and of course graffiti is always there.

FOR CAPT. MAHAJAN: I liked your avatar- great !!

indians are world beaters at pissing on streets, spitting, spitting paaan juice in a manner so as to leave behind interesting graffiti, scratching their balls, picking their nose, declaring their love on monument walls, speaking with their mouths full of food, littering everyplace with leftovers and food packets, smoking in publi places, you name it.

It is a shame, but I think it will get trounced out and soon be taboo. With India's growing economy, I think there will be more pride in the nation, and people will try to do their best in keeping India clean and great. But there are always a few people who have to spoil the party.
