Sound horn:

Honk when you are on an empty road with no vehicles or people, or animals within miles.

Honk when you see another vehicle: he honks back to let you know that he has seen you too. You honk back to let him know that you heard him honk; he reciprocates with a honk. When you pass each other, you both honk to let each other know that you have passed each other.

Honk when there are 400 vehicles blocking the street. Honking may help to unblock the street.

Honk whenever you see a pothole - this warns the pothole that you are about to cross it.

Honk when there are no potholes. This warns potential potholes that if they appear you will cross them.

Honk on straight roads, or bendy roads or in your own driveway.

Honk whilst going downhill or uphill, or on level ground.

In India, it is only unnecessary to honk at your own funeral - other people will honk for you.

Im an Indian and I dont agree w Biswajeet or anyone else trying to defend Indian pride at honking at all....its a bloody pain and i dont find anything amusing abt honking and wish somebody gave them 5 yrs in jail for it..

usually you(I) feel like taking a metal rod and smashing each window personally for honking for no FKing reason...and there usually is NO reason, its BS...and god forbid if ure trying to cross and think anyones bothered to stop or have any courtesy...the BIGGEST goddamn problem is Indians dont admit to their own problems and limited thinking...why the hell to get defensive when you obviously dont care abt ure improving things for society...

Travelling for two hours on a busy road in India, the sheer honking diversity of pitch, volume, frequency and syncopated tooting borders on the orchestral .... a symphony of horns. By the next hour of so I find one forgets there are vehicles and drivers attached to these horns which seem to take on characters of their own, sort of like animal calls ... and by that stage it's a very noisy barnyard!

Speaking of, last year (or may be it was early this year?)the Cambodian government passed a law banning what had become the latest fad, horns that make animal sounds. Phnom Penh was starting to sound like a crazy jungle, what with the all the lions roaring at screeching monkeys chased by barking dogs as cows mooed, cockeralls cockledoodledooed and horses neighed at all and sundry.

Please tell me this fad will not catch on in India!

In India, Honking is for Survival most of the times, Because people either walking or driving will never care to look at the roads before they either cross or change lanes.

65% of the drivers (Two & Four) wheelers dont use rear view mirrors. Buses and trucks are least bothered about others vehicles and they will never bother to signal before switching lanes as there will be a minimal damage to them even if they are hit by another vehicle.

We do Honk and there is a disorder called Compulsive Honking discorder which is induced from the car trainer level so that you and your vehicle's access path are left alone.

Some of them come out of this disorder and honk when required. Others are still suffering.

Of course Honking Horn is free.

When I was learning my car driving lessons the Trainer shouted at me that "Paise lagte hain kya horn bajane me?." Means "Does it cost you anything to press the horn?"

Imagine if we start getting Horn Bills with our Telephone and electricity bills.

You can differ with me and others, but I there is always a reason for everything, including honking. The reasons have been mentioned in the prior threads.

BTW, I notice that you are from the "dry" state...maybe that's the reason .....for your wanting to "smash each window". Take it easy.

Drystate,

as long as you have sunday drivers crawling along on expressways at 50 kph or rogue indicas/bikers cutting across other vehicles rashly/stupidly, people will use the horn. Get over it.

and yes, esp those learned rogues who pay cash in a designated automated tag lane.

I perfectly understand now in which situations Indians honk... what I still don't get is how you know who's honking at the moment when there are several cars. I know, most likely all of them do it, but then there's no reason anymore
