My BIGGEST pet peeve! I remember when I was leaving Delhi in 2004, and was in line outside IGIA, a man with a trolley pushed in right infront of me, and stood there. Being an assertive, takes no bulls**t 18 year old at the time, I just go "Oi!Get to the back of the line!" He gave me a stupid reply, saying "Sorry, I did not know there was a line!" and he moved towards the back.
Then again in Delhi, this time when I arrived from Malaysia in Feb 2007. There was a line of people for the pre-paid taxis, and a large man bumps infront of me and wait. I really get annoyed after this uncomfortable trip, and in English, go "Get to the back of the f***ing line!. He looks very angry and walks away in defeat. I feel bad for swearing now, but hey, that should teach him!

I was once boarding flight from Zürich to Delhi, and most of the passengers were Indians. This was for boarding to the plane, where everyone has been alloted a seat and yet, everyone wanted to go in at once. The ground crew even commented that this is what happens on a flight to India! And I won't even start about New Delhi airport

I find this unwillingness to have patience or respect any sort of line absolutely atrocious. I was just flying this weekend via Delhi (domestic flight) and while I was watching other passengers board the plane a man was standing in the aisle behind a couple people who were taking a few seconds to put their bags in the overhead compartment and this man became very restless and was saying, "Excuse me....excuse me..." just to get a few rows back to his seat. Like he was going to miss the flight - we were all boarding the same plane, for heavens sake!

I get impatient with people taking time with their hand baggage when all they need to do is stow it and sit down, letting the rest of us past.

Lack of patience and lack of respect/care for other's belongings
. On the Singapore - Bangalore flight I found that my bag was taken and stuffed elsewhere to make space for somebody's lugguage. Thankfully my wine bottle didn't break .After 5 weeks in Japan, charming country, quiet, orderly, clean and lively. I had to change three flights, the last one for Bangalore. The first two were un-eventful and actually quite pleasant, what with all the beer and in-flight entertainment. Then I had to board the Indian Airlines flight to Bangalore. As always it was late by some 30 mins, and then wham, it was like boarding a bus back in India. Everybody rushing in, bringing on too much baggage, trying to shove it where-ever there is space. Somebody shouting. People trying to push their way through. It was a melee. Then I realised our plane was an Airbus. True, it was an Airbus 320 .

I seem to recall reading that one of the budget Indian airlines did not allocate seats, so there was a scrum for the window ones, and the plane filled up in no time, and up to schedule

Some guy just cut in front of me while buying my groceries just 15min back! I hate this type of behavior - but what also steams me up is the fact that the employees don't say anything to these jerks - I mentioned to the employee when I came up that that type of budging should not be allowed
I have this happen to me practically on a daily basis At airports and things when time is of importance, I tell them that there is a Q and you need to start from the back, I will not let anyone in front of me - at least those who do not ask. I worked behind a counter in the US when I was younger and we were always told to follow the Q and be polite...I have never had an employee in India - anywhere - tell the person that is doing the budging to get to the back ![]() |

I remember a line once at the busstation in Gangtok. We stood in line from 0645 on to get bustickets. There were about 6 indian ladies waiting in front of us and 10 or more behind. From 0700 hours on they started selling tickets and men walked up and pushed themselves before the first lady in line. I took the first guy by the collar of his leather jacket and kindly showed (shoved) him to the end of the line. I got appreciative nods from the ladies, that changed to cheers after the fourth guy whom I showed his rightfull place. Well we got our tickets pretty quickly and as we had to wait for our bus anyhow, just for fun I stayed on to reorganise the line untill all the ladies got their tickets. No shortage of chai and snacks on the following busride

At Delhi airport, dropping off my sister, I let a foreign (midwestern USA, by the accent) take a trolley ahead of me, as she was being unneccesarily extremely abusive to a meek looking Indian guy who obstructed her by mistake... because, as I told the lady in my best Brando imitation, she needed to get out of the country, like, 'right now'.

On our return flight from India in 2002, a guy with his cart comes and stand in front of me and my wife waiting to put our luggage into the X-ray machine. My 5 foot 1 inch skinny Japanese wife would have none of it and told him to get the hell out of our way. He apologized and let us load our luggage before him. It was hilarious!! The behaviour is is same at every kind of counter in India. I had high hopes for the post independence generation to learn to stand in line and wait their turn. I was wrong! Sad! Really Sad!

That happened at a ticket counter with my wife. Big mistake, she guessed he was Bengali and let loose. He cringed away. Watch out for those multilingual ladies, small or not..

My second day in India ,standing 2nd in line at the ticket counter of Vidhan Sabah metro station, Delhì, several Indians pushed in front of me and got their tickets. I was totally unprepared for this and just stood there feeling stupid. I later channelled my anger into a strategy for the next day.
Next day a man tried to jump the line and I gave him a friendly, Aussie Rules style, hip bump as he passed. He ended up at the next counter (which was closed). He looked at me like " What are you doing!?" I said, in my best clipped english, "Sorry, no space here. Space at end of line." I really felt I'd begun my trip in India then.
